This is an excellent tool for beginner writers, struggling writers, or English Language learners.

BLANK DIY ANCHOR CHART:

  • Write a personal pronoun (e.g., he, she, they) in the center of the flower.
  • Brainstorm expressions or phrases that can be replaced by this pronoun.
  • Write these ideas on the petals surrounding the center.

INSTRUCTIONS on how to set up the BUG SWATTING GAME:

Print & Prepare

  • print out and laminate the bugs
  • print out, cut up and laminate the sentence cards
  • print out, cut up and laminate two fly swatters (optional)
  • It’s best to use real fly swatters. Students can also just use their hands.

Play

SMALL GROUP ACTIVITY:

  • place the bugs on the floor (facing up) and the sentence cards in a pile beside the bugs (facing down)
  • students take turns flipping over a sentence card and swatting the bug with the corresponding subject pronoun
  • then they read the sentence on the card

PAIR ACTIVITY:

  • each student in the pair has their own fly swatter
  • a teacher / helper or a fellow student flips over a sentence card
  • the first student to swat the correct bug gets a point
  • then they read the sentence on the card

TEAM GAME:

  • the students form 2 lines (team A and team B)
  • the first student at the front of each line gets a fly swatter
  • the teacher flips a sentence card
  • the first student to swat the correct bug wins a point for their team
  • then he / she reads the sentence
  • they hand over the fly swatters to those second in line and go to the back of the line

EXTENSION ACTIVITY

  • students mix up the sentence cards and then work together to place them under the correct bug

Idioms Activity a Figurative Language Project for Elementary Pet Lovers

Do you want to make reviewing idioms fun and engaging? Are your students creative and like pets? Then download this Idioms Activity a Figurative Language Project for Elementary Pet Lovers! Students will love creating their own pet adoption flyers. Well suited for the Language Arts or ELL classroom, your students will be having so much fun they will forget they are learning! This activity uses figurative language in a fun activity where students will plan a flyer for a pet adoption event at a local pet store. Using a list of 45+ animal idioms and a prewriting sheet, students will plan out which animals they will advertise, and which idioms they will use to describe the animals.

Then, students can select from five different “Pet Adoption Fair” flyers to use as their final draft. A grading rubric is included to assist with grading their final project. A shorter list of 18 animal idioms is included for younger students.
