4th Grade Close Reading Unit Plans

This is a complete unit for ecosystems for kids! It was designed with the third-grade NGSS in mind. Each component of this comprehensive, interactive unit has been researched and tried! 1. Ecosystems

-video suggestions/link for basic introduction

-vocabulary cards for: habitat, ecosystem, and biome

-an introductory sheet for each of the following biomes: arctic

tundra, deserts, oceans, temperate forests, and wetlands

Each sheet has a short description, acolorful photo, and

suggested student friendly site for students to read more about

the habitat

-3 graphic organizers for students to record their findings on

-at least 12 photographs of plants and animals from each habitat

with labels

-headers for each ecosystem that can be cut out and colored for

presentation boards

2. Food Chains/Energy Flow Within Each Ecosystem

-video suggestion/link about food chains

-vocabulary cards for food chain, sun, decomposer, producer,

consumer, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, predator, and prey

-poster of sample human food chain

-2 graphic organizers for students including explicit models for

teachers to use to guide students

3. Plant and Animal Interactions Within Ecosystems

-suggestion videos/links for animal and plant adaptations

-graphic organizers to guide follow-up video discussions

-vocabulary cards for adaptations, camouflage, hibernation, and

mimicry

-worksheets for students to show what they know by creating

their own plant or animal that can survive in their ecosystem
