Who?

This resource is designed for third-grade and fourth-grade students and could also be used for fifth-grade students who need extra support.

Since the resource is aligned to 3rd-grade standard 3.0A.A.3 (multiplication and division problems through 100), it is a great resource for upper elementary students to work on independently during math centers.

This resource is a fantastic way for your students to practice analyzing story problems and determining whether they need to multiply or divide based on the words in the problem.

Common core aligned to CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

*********************************************************

What will students learn?

Students will learn how to identify the correct operation (multiplication or division) based on the context of the problem.

Students will use the modeling tool to identify keywords in the problem, determine the known and unknown information, and create a visual representation of what is happening in the story problem.

The story problems include real-world situations so students can visualize the story problem and make sense of whether they should multiply or divide.

 *********************************************************

Ways to use this resource:

  • Display the modeling tool on the board during whole group lessons and model solving multiplication and division story problems while students follow along on the worksheets
  • Math centers
