A fun way to match up the solfege syllables with the hand signs! In Solfege Mix n Match, each contestant will be given the 7 plastic solfege syllables (included that you can print out and laminate), which are affixed to the board with magnetic tape. In this “boy vs. girl” competition (or team 1 vs team 2), the name of a solfege syllable will appear on the screen and contestants must drag the correct hand sign to their answer box… The first contestant to drag their answer to the answer box wins that round! Keep score, award points, or just play for fun! Included are 80+ slides for your enjoyment. Have fun!

Shaun the Sheep hits theaters this summer, and there's no better way to work on Solfege than "Sol Mi Sheep - Level One!". In Sol Mi Sheep, Shaun the Sheep, the Lambs, and the Farmer, help the kids identify where the Sol, Mi, and La lines are on the staff in a game format. Characters are placed on different solfege levels and students will sing back the solfege syllables as they see them. If the class masters the solfege example, the slide will advance and the high score will continue to elevate. Each character has an independent rhythm -- Shaun is a quarter note, the lambs are a pair of eighth notes, and the farmer is a quarter rest. The way I construct the lesson is I have all classes participate and record the highest score at the end of the lesson. I run this exercise about 2 or 3 minutes (it helps if you have a percussive background track running around 90-110 bpm) and let the students keep adding to their score. You'll notice that the more the activity progresses, the solfege examples become more lengthy and difficult. I keep track of the scores on a different powerpoint so the kids can see how they're progressing AND how they match up against other classes in their grade. Trust me, it gets pretty competitive! :) Included are instructions and the game in PDF and powerpoint format. All steps are a 2nd, so no La to Mi skips... yet ;) If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment. Happy Sol Mi La-ing!
Enemy, Imagine Dragons - RHYTHM BASKETBALL!
By Jason Litt
eed to connect with your kids with their pop music through general music? Involve them in bucket drumming with the Imagine Dragons smash hit from 2021, "Enemy"! This one REALLY grooves and is perfect for kids... as the lyrics are ALL clean! :D
There are three all-color coded slides along with the form identifiers listed next to each phrase. Discuss form with the students and teach them (by rote) the rhythms on the powerpoint with the corresponding repeats (most are repeated 3 or 4 times). Then, apply it to drums!
For this, your students will each have a basketball (can be regulation size or smaller) and bounce their ball on the ground each time they see a basketball icon. Each basketball icon is denoted as a quarter note. The rests are in between each ball for the students to hold the ball. Any smaller balls (grouped in two) will be played as 2 eighth note pairs and students will have to lower themselves a foot or two to dribble eighth notes on the floor
There's also a "pat" icon with a hand below the basketball icon itself, so you will have the student hold the basketball in one hand and pat the ball on the beat

Based off the hit Windows 3.11 game we all knew and loved, Solfege Sweeper is a progressive game where one slip can end you up on the dreaded mine! This will have your kids reading and mastering solfege in NO TIME! Students will see a grid of 40 squares on the home page. Each square contains either a link to a solfege syllable.... or a mine :) I select one student at a time to pick a number. I'll then click on the number and it'll advance to the designated slide. If it's a solfege syllable, we add that solfege syllable to the Building Board on the home page. The teacher will click "Back to Game and Building Board" and put the solfege syllable they just received on the board. As for the solfege syllable they earned, you can cut out the included syllables (make a bunch of copies!), write them in dry erase, or have a student keep tabs on the side. Students will now sing the solfege syllables back in order. Then we repeat! See how it gets progressive? ;) AND what a great way to do a composition. Heck, you should get your piano involved too! ...until the mine! There are 5 mines in each game, and once the mine is hit, it's GAME OVER! At the end, you can tally up how many syllables the class amassed. Compete against other classes, or themselves! There are 5 files in the pack and each one is completely different (all the syllables are mixed up and of course, so are the mines) Syllables included are DO, MI, SOL, and LA. Have fun with this and let me know if you have any questions by leaving a comment!

Reviewing solfege with your kids? This may be the game format you're looking for!
An authentic jeopardy game board with categories for "Give me a Hand", "Take a Look", "Scale it!", and "Extended Solfege" on the title slide. Students can elect to pick $200, $400, $600, $800, or $1000 answers. After clicking on the amount, the answer will appear on the next slide.
Give me a Hand - A description of the hand sign and students will have to guess which syllable
Take a Look - Students will see the sign and have to guess which syllable
Scale it - The following and preceding notes in the solfege scale
Extended Solfege - Lowered and raised versions of common solfege
A text answer will first be visible, but if you advance the animation, the solfege sign/syllable will enter the slide if your kids need a hint. Students (keeping in true Jeopardy! fashion) can answer in the form of a question
"What is a Do?"
"What is a Ti?"
"What is La?"
After the money is awarded (You can split sides of your class, boys vs girls, class vs class, however you want it!), there is a link in the bottom right hand corner to go back to the title screen and game board.
After extracting the ZIP file, make sure to install the Jeopardy! font included, or else you'll see random characters all over -- not good eats!

SOLFEGE BATTLE ROYALE! (Great for Centers!)
By Jason Litt
In SOLFEGE BATTLE ROYALE, students will receive a deck of random solfege syllables which they will turn face down and keep them to themselves.
Students may receive two of the same card, three of the same card, or even no particular solfege card during the game. (You will decide whether students get 10, 15, 20, etc... the more cards the students get, the more opportunities they have to play... and win!!!)
Students (up to 5 players) may sit in a circle or around a hula hoop and count down from 3… They will say "3...2...1... BATTLE!"
As soon as they hit the word “BATTLE!”, just like the card game "WAR" every student in the circle throws their top card down into the circle
The students will look around and identify which syllable is the highest in the series. As we’ve learned, the syllables go ascending (up) from the following syllables…
Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti
Once the students identify the highest syllable, the student with the highest syllable is declared the winner of that battle!
The student gets to take all of the cards from the other students and repeat again
Then they keep it going and going and going! Then the students play a new round until time is up and whoever is left with the most solfege cards at the end of the game is the winner!
All you need are:
You're there to just facilitate :) Have a great time with this, kids LOVE it!

In this new game where your students will have the fastest eye, Rhythm Waldo teachers your kids their aural theory in this fast paced activity!
Directions
Print out the included powerpoint on 8.5"x11" cardstock, as many copies as you'd like, and assign to a group of students, individual students, or however you'd like to play. Each cardstock pair have 12 different rhythms on them and they'll lay all the rhythms out on the floor in front of them. The rhythms will be simple, all comprised of quarter notes, eighth note pairs, and quarter rests _(would be ideal for 2nd-5th graders)
_
You will then play an audio example of a rhythm and the students will have to find which rhythm you played (by of course, searching through all 12 of their rhythms, while maintaining the rhythm in their head). The first one to hold it up is deemed the winner!
You can play this individually, team vs team, boys vs girls, however you wish!
There are 12 examples (and some of them may end up repeating!)
Have a great time with this!
