Social-emotional learning has never been more important!  This conflict resolution corner outlines STEP-BY-STEP instructions for helping students to solve conflicts with one another.  You'll find that this problem solving strategy looks like a flowchart when it's displayed in your classroom. You or your school counselor could introduce it as a conflict resolution guidance lesson and then give a few scenarios to help students with friendship conflict resolution. After this you can display it in a corner of your room so that students can refer to it when resolving conflicts.

Don't have a corner or bulletin board space?  That's okay!  You will also find smaller versions of the step-by-step flowchart that students can glue into a notebook.

Are your students learning online?  No worries!  We've got you covered with a digital version in Google Forms.  Students will be taken through a series of questions to help them resolve the conflict.

This social-emotional learning file includes the following:

  • an image of a sample conflict resolution corner already set up
  • letters for the title of the corner (Conflict Resolution Corner...)
  • title poster (Identify Conflict: What is my conflict?)
  • flowchart questions to determine the next steps for students
  • arrows and other images (lightbulbs, yes/no cards) to embellish your conflict resolution corner
  • posters with steps to follow when resolving a conflict
  • a feelings poster
  • conflict resolution tips for students (1 page)
  • posters for the following:  I-Messages, Listening & Checking for Understanding, Apologizing, and Accepting an Apology
  • small versions of every poster/card
  • black-and-white versions of every page

This file was created for upper elementary students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th grade.  Using it with younger kids would require a great deal of support (the vocabulary used in the resource is above a primary level).

  • Use these posters on a bulletin board, classroom display, counseling office, or common area in your school.
  • Set a goal for students to reach, but issue a “challenge” for students to go above and beyond the recommended goal. Each challenge (poster) is worth TWO points. Students get one point for writing the letter and an additional point for sending or delivering the letter/note. Some posters DO REQUIRE students to research an address. NOTE: The second point on any given challenge CANNOT be earned until the letter is dropped off at the post office or delivered in person.
  • You will find a challenge sheet for students to keep track of their points. You can structure the challenge in whatever way works best for your class. You can ask students to RIP-N-RECOGNIZE as an early finisher activity, a bell ringer activity, for a gratitude exercise in Social Studies, or as a writing activity during your ELA block.
  • You may choose NOT to use the points as an incentive and instead teach students that expressing gratitude is an inherently rewarding experience all by itself.
  • Each challenge sheet has enough space for 5 challenges. Simply offer copies of the same sheet for students who complete more than 5 letters/notes.
  • It is best for students to rip ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME. Their next challenge can’t be “ripped” until they finish the first challenge they chose. This will eliminate issues with students ripping too many challenges at a time, losing the little ripped notes, and “biting off more than they can chew”.
  • There are 20 challenge options for students. Some challenges might not work for some students. Honor and respect a student’s choice NOT to do challenges that don’t work for their life circumstances. For example, you might have students who don’t know any other family members outside their immediate home, students who are in a foster situation, or students who are homeless. Requiring students to complete ALL the challenges will surely put some students in a vulnerable position and that is not the goal of this activity.

GRATITUDE JOURNAL ACTIVITIES DESCRIPTION:

These gratitude activities are perfect for any time of year, but are particularly timely for the holiday season during Thanksgiving or Christmas. You will find two gratitude journals in this file as well as gratitude worksheets and printables.

This file contains:

  • The Gratitude Journal with 24 pages of prompts (can be used as daily gratitude prompts during the holidays)
  • Gratitude from A-to-Z (much like a blank dictionary) for students to fill in
  • a hand full of worksheets or printables to help your students reflect on gratitude in their lives

Research on gratitude shows that keeping a gratitude journal has a positive effect on overall mood. Gratitude ignites the parasympathetic nervous system, which leads to feelings of calmness. Expressing gratitude releases dopamine and serotonin, which also results in a more pleasurable state of mind.

Perfect for 1st-5th grade, students can use this daily journal and dictionary to reflect on gratitude in their own lives. This gratitude product also includes printable writing activities.

NOTE: THESE FILES INCLUDE A DIGITAL DISTANCE LEARNING OPTION!

These products include a digital option (as well as the no prep printable option). The instructions for utilizing the digital portion appear at the end of the packet.

Conflict Resolution Corner Activities: Social Problem Solving Strategies

By Kirsten's Kaboodle

Conflict Resolution Activities Corner: Social Problem-Solving Strategies for Kids in 1st and 2nd grade

This file was created for 1st and 2nd-grade students. If you'd like to take at the upper elementary file, you can find it here: Conflict Resolution Corner for Upper Grades

Don't have a corner or bulletin board space?  That's okay!  You will also find smaller versions of the step-by-step posters that students can glue into a notebook.

  • 8 posters listing the steps of resolving a conflict
  • 4 reference pages for the corner (tips, feelings chart, asking for help, possible solutions)
  • small versions of every poster/card
  • black-and-white versions of every page

This file was created for students in 1st and 2nd-grade but would work just fine in a 3rd or 4th-grade classroom as well.  Using it with younger kids would require a great deal of support (the vocabulary used in the resource is above a primary level).

Red A Crayon's Story Literature Unit Activities for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade

By Kirsten's Kaboodle

Red A Crayon's Story: Inclusion and Acceptance Read Aloud Book and Activities

This story, Red: A Crayon's Story, is perfect for teaching students about acceptance, compassion, empowerment, friendship, and celebrating who they are!

Red is a crayon who is expected to create red things. With help from his friends and family, he continues to try and try but can't seem to get it right. One day, a new friend asks him to create an ocean, and he experiences success for the first time in his life (because he realizes he is actually blue on the inside)!

Though the message in this story is applicable for any age, this product was created specifically for 2nd-6th grade. Please check the preview to determine the appropriateness for your own class of students.

This story can apply to students in so many different ways, but I chose to focus on this list of topics:

  • 14 discussion questions in list form and in task card form (some are text-dependent and some are designed as reflection questions)
  • an optional answer sheet for the 14 discussion questions
  • a self-acceptance printable
  • a peer-pressure printable
  • a writing prompt with an optional back page
  • You are a STAR (write positive things about one of your classmates)
  • a printable about labels given to people (positive labels and negative labels)
  • 5 full color posters with inspirational quotes that applicable to the story (all 5 posters are also available in black and white)
  • 5 worksheets that correspond to the quotes (each printable asks students how they can apply the quotes to their own lives)
  • terms of use

NOTE: THIS FILE INCLUDES A DIGITAL DISTANCE LEARNING OPTION!
