Writing a Play - Graphic Organizer, Example, and Template

Writing a play is a perfect project that gives students time to write about an event that happened in their life or an event that they made up. Once they are finished, they can share it with different groups of people and have their friends play each character. This packet includes information to share with your students about what a play is, what steps to follow when writing the beginning, middle and end of a play, why we write a play, who we write a play for, and tips to look for when rereading and editing. This packet also includes an example showing the process that is used to write with a play using a graphic organizer and an example of a play. On the last several pages, two templates are included to help students write the rough draft and final draft of their play that includes space for characters, props, act, scenes, and lines to show what their characters are saying.

In this product, Coyote School News is read and reviewed. In this product, students will read the text, Coyote School News. Students will review/learn what a historical fiction text is and will have the opportunity to identify historical fiction texts and come up with possible historical fiction story ideas. As students read the text, Coyote School News, they will answer comprehension questions using this product. They can complete these questions individually, in a small group, or with support. There are several pages of comprehension questions in this packet that differ from the questions asked in the teacher edition. The questions from the text are adapted in this packet to meet each of your student's needs. At the end of the packet, students will answer comprehension questions about the author, Joan Sandin. At the end of the packet is a template and the steps necessary for your students to write a newspaper article as well.

In this product, The Reading Street - What Jo Did is read and reviewed. In this product, students will read the comprehension passage, What Jo Did. Students will review the selection vocabulary words: fouled, hoop, jersey, marveled, rim, speechless, swatted, and unbelievable. Examples of each selection vocabulary word are used in sentences. Students have the opportunity to make up a sentence using each selection vocabulary word as well. Students will review/learn what a fiction text is and will have the opportunity to come up with possible fiction story ideas. As students read the text, What Jo Did, they can answer comprehension questions. They can complete these questions individually, in a small group, or with support. There are several pages of comprehension questions in this packet that differ from the questions asked in the teacher edition. Students will also be introduced to writing sentences about a picture, writing a story about themselves, writing a poem, writing a friendly letter, writing a descriptive paragraph, writing a story, writing a riddle, writing a book report, and writing how-to sentences. They can complete these questions individually, in a small group, or with support. The questions from the letter are adapted in this packet to meet each of your student's needs. In the beginning of the packet, the selection vocabulary words are reviewed along with pictures. Students can then create a sentence using each selection vocabulary word. The question, "what is a letter" is answered.
