Your students will demonstrate their learning for Social Studies by sharing their experience with relationships roles and responsibilities. Students will draw pictures and write short responses as they identify with how their roles and responsibilities change over time. Students will celebrate their similarities and their differences as they meet the expectations of the Ontario Curriculum, including the updates for 2023, for Grade 1 Social Studies. Students are also asked to reflect on how residential schools had an impact on Indigenous families.
Worksheets can act as a starting point for discussion, and as a means to demonstrate their learning. Collect these pages and use them as data for your report card comments for social studies.
Activity pages include:
What I Can Do Changes as I Grow Students will draw a picture of something they could do as a baby, something they can do now, and something they hope to be able to do when they grow up! Discuss how we learn new things as we grow! Writing space is below for differentiation.
My Responsibilities Change as I Grow Students will draw pictures of a responsibility they had as a child, and what their responsibilities may be as a teenager and and adult. Writing space is below for those who would like to share their knowledge with writing.
My Roles Change as I Grow Students will draw a picture (and write if ready) of one of their roles as a child, as a teenager and as an adult. Students will recognize that they have multiple roles. Often the older someone becomes, the more roles they have.
How Would my Role Change? Students will draw a picture and write about how their role in the family would change if there were to be a new baby in the family.
What Happens When we are Not Responsible? Students must think about a responsibility that an adult in their family has. They must also draw and write about what would happen when that responsibility isn't carried out.
Significant Events in our Lives Students create a short timeline of significant events in their lives. Discuss how the addition of a new family member, a move, a new school, new teams, new hobbies etc. may affect how they feel, or how their family routines are affected.
Residential Schools Students are asked to reflect on what they have learned about residential schools and the impact they had on Indigenous families.
The final page is simply a suggestion to create a picture or a card for someone who has helped them recently! Spread kindness!
