Speech and Language Development Pyramid | Handout for parents and teachers

By Puddle Jumpers Speech Pathology

Do you need a quick and simple handout to show parents how language typically develops? The building blocks of language development is often referred to as the "Pyramid of Language Development". Parents often have difficulty understanding that children need to develop skills in listening, joint attention, play, and understanding before speaking.

The language pyramid is an easy way to show development. The skills at the bottom of the pyramid need to be in place in order to support the development of skills higher up the pyramid.

Note: Whilst this model is extremely useful to explain to parents that we don't always jump straight to articulation in therapy, it is important to note the limitations of this model. Not all skills need to be mastered before the next layer is reached, language keeps on developing even after speech starts. Make sure you do your own research and understand that all children develop language differently.

Contents: This is a one sheet summary in color and black and white.

What other teacher’s are saying about my other products:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Lucky Squares: My students beg me to play this whenever they have a bit of free time!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Honeycomb Race: These are awesome! Such an easy extension from UFLI lessons to use for centers, homework, small groups. I love these!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My students love playing the Dots and Boxes game! It provides great practice and reinforcement of the skill we're working on in UFLI. I have extra copies that I keep for fast finishers, so they can play with a classmate.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Capture the Flag: This is a great resource! I love UFLI and having an additional game to practice the sound we are working on is very engaging for my students.

Cut in half and distribute to students for independent practice. To maximize the learning opportunity, spend 5-10 minutes reviewing the correct answers with the class and allow students to make self-corrections.

To Use as an ELAR Center
Print a stack of the cards for the day and place them in one of your centers or designate it as seatwork during one ELAR or Daily 5 rotation. As you finish a mini-lesson and break out to meet with a smaller group, have others complete the daily practice as an independent activity.

To Use as Task Cards
Print a whole set of review cards and have students work through the cards together, in groups, or independently to review the concepts.

To Use as Assessment
These half-page worksheets are great for quick assessments to gauge student understanding with just a few questions so can implement intervention if needed before moving more in-depth on a topic.

To Use as Bell Ringers

Scrambled Sentences - Read, Write, and Draw October Sampler

By Sassycat Corner

Halloween and fall fun with scrambled sentences! Scrambled sentences are a great way to practice capitalization, comprehension, fluency, content, sight words, content words and punctuation! And with this Halloween & fall themed sentence scramble sampler pack, it's also fun! Students read, cut & paste, write, and draw with each sentence.

This is a SAMPLER pack. It has FOUR themed pages, one each from October's theme - spiders, bats, pumpkins, and Halloween. It also has two blank pages that you can hand write your own sentences onto.

If you like the sampler, and want the full packs, just follow the links below under the bundle tab. They lead to both the October bundle, and the individual sets.

For each set, there are 10 pages with an eight word sentence, plus punctuation at the bottom of each page. You also get 5 blank templates that you can hand write your own sentences onto, if you want harder or easier sentences. You and your students read the words together, then cut them apart. Students then arrange them into sentence form and glue them into the boxes at the top. Students can then write the sentence on the handwriting line provided, then illustrate the sentence in the box provided. Finally, students can practice fluency by reading the sentences to each other or to the teacher.

These were made originally for seat work for a first grade friend, but I have a fellow kindergarten teacher who is using it in a small group with her high students. These would be good from K-2 in teacher led small groups, intervention, enrichment, or independent seat work, depending upon their reading / writing abilities.
