Negative thoughts have a profound effect on students’ academic and social successes, behaviors, emotions, self-esteem, and happiness. Negative thinking and self-talk can hold them back and keep them from reaching their full potential. In cognitive behavioral therapy, there are dozens of thinking errors that cause the mind to believe things that are just not true. These writing and discussion questions helps students to understand and reflect about the concept of negative thinking and mindsets and how they themselves can avoid self-defeating thoughts. They can spark some really thoughtful discussions!

Directions:
- Label each of the four corners of your room with signs for the following: Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree.

This product includes 1 social story that focuses on feeling uncomfortable. Students will learn the meaning for the words feeling uncomfortable, feeling discomfort, feeling uneasy, being awkward, worrying, feeling restless, and advocating for yourself.
In the social story that is included in this product that relates with feeling uncomfortable, what feeling uncomfortable, how you feel discomfort or feel uneasy about something and what one can do when in this situation, the importance of advocating for oneself even though they may feel uncomfortable, examples of how someone can advocate for themselves if they feel uncomfortable and the importance in doing so, why it is important to advocate for yourself even if it makes you uncomfortable, and why advocacy can be challenging.
The social story includes comprehension questions throughout. Some of the questions require students to put their feet in the shoes of the characters. At the end of this product, there are 4 role-playing scenario cards that will require students to discuss how they feel when they are feeling uncomfortable and what each character feels in each situation and why, what the character can do to feel better about the given situation, what the student would do if they were in that situation, etc.

Choose a scenario card - Each scenario is presented as something you are ABOUT to do or say.
Consider if your plan will have a positive or negative impact on others by answering proactive thinking questions (use the one-page graphic organizer worksheet or the visual support boards to guide your self-reflection).
Based on your answers, decide if you should KEEP or CHANGE your plan.
Perspective taking can be difficult for many students, especially those with executive functioning challenges. Perspective taking requires a person to think ahead and beyond their own desires and viewpoints to gain a deeper understanding of others, the world around them, and their impact on people.
