When people do things we don’t like, we get upset, angry, hurt, and/or disappointed because they don’t act or behave in a manner that we want or expect them to. Sometimes, we try to force or manipulate them into acting and behaving a certain way. We need to give up on trying to control others by letting them make their own decisions and verbalizing and dealing with our disappointments in an appropriate manner.

It is important for teenagers to understand that the way they react and respond to situations can either add fuel to the fire or diffuse tension, resolve conflict, and minimize negative emotions. Teaching teens how to respond appropriately to situations both verbally and nonverbally, even when they are angry, hurt, and disappointed can greatly help them prevent conflicts from escalating.

These THREE activities will give students to practice managing their disappointments, anger, and concerns in an appropriate manner. Students will practice expressing their concerns, disappointments, or feelings in a way that is mature and respectful.

This resource features a total of 6 real-life, highly relevant scenarios that come in the following variations BOTH Print and Digital):

Variation #1 - Graphic Organizer-style with example - A worksheet that includes a total of two scenarios and an example of how NOT to respond in the given situations. Students will, instead, determine appropriate and mature ways to respond in such situations. (Variation #1 worksheets include a total of 3 worksheets / 2 scenarios on each worksheet.) Answer Keys are included for this variation.

Variation #2 - Writing Response-style - Worksheets that include one scenario (***the SAME scenarios in VARIATION #1 worksheets). This variation is a writing response-style worksheet. (Variation #2 worksheets include a total of 6 worksheets and the SAME exact scenarios in Variation #1 worksheets!) Students read the scenario and answer the following question:

How would you manage your emotions in this situation? How would you express your concern, disappointment, or feelings in a way that is mature and respectful?

☆☆☆ The different variations can greatly support your differentiation efforts! ☆☆☆

**************************************

Sometimes, people’s inconsiderate and selfish behaviors can upset, hurt, frustrate, and embarrass you and can cause an argument or conflict between you and the person. These situations can unleash strong emotions and cause resentment, which is why it is important to respectfully raise these issues with the people involved and have these courageous conversations. Raising issues and setting boundaries in a respectful, non-confrontational manner can increase awareness of the situation, resolve conflicts, and prevent damaging relationships.

This resources features 6 highly relevant scenarios where students practice raising the uncomfortable issues presented to the person/people involved in a respectful, non-confrontational manner.

This resource features a total of 6 real-life, highly relevant scenarios that come in the following two variations (BOTH Print and Digital):

Variation #1 - Guidance Question/Statement- style - A worksheet that includes one scenario and four guidance questions in the form of statements to help them practice having productive, informative, and respectful courageous conversations in a non-confrontational manner. Students use these four (guidance) steps:

  • (Facts) Explaining the issue to the person/people involved by focusing on the facts.
  • (Feelings) Telling the person/people involved how the behavior makes them feel.
  • (Expectations) Expressing reasonable change(s) you expect from the person/people involved.
  • (Consequences/Boundary Setting) Communicating the consequences if the person/people involved do not change.

☆ Detailed Answer Keys/Sample Responses are included for this variation.

Explain how you would handle this situation, and how you would raise this issue to the person involved in a respectful, non-confrontational manner.

☆☆☆ The different variations can greatly support your differentiation efforts! ☆☆☆

Most students have cell phones and communicate with family, friends, and classmates through text messaging. Just about ALL students are familiar with text messaging. Why not teach and practice social skills, kindness, empathy, effective communication, and SO MUCH MORE in such a way that appeals to their interests?! No student will be able to resist these activities - for real!

This resource includes a total of 12 Text Messaging Activity Worksheets that come in four different text messaging formats! There are three worksheets for each format, totaling 12 text messaging worksheets. Students are asked to read a text message, some longer than others, and respond appropriately. Responding appropriately to text messages despite feelings of anger, frustration, betrayal, etc. can greatly help students prevent conflicts from escalating and drama from arising. Additionally, these activities give students an opportunity to "FILTER THEIR THOUGHTS and MOUTHS"! They will ultimately understand the concept that it's not what is said, but how it is said. They will feel encouraged to choose their words wisely when communicating with others.

The text message conversations and topics are age appropriate, HIGHLY relevant, familiar, and FUN! Students will easily identify with some of the people engaging in these text conversations. It would be interesting to see what students can infer and how they will respond in such situations. Additionally, you can extend these conversations by having students read them aloud so they can "hear" what social skills sounds like and what it doesn't.

☆☆☆ The different variations can greatly support your differentiation efforts! ☆☆☆

Lesson plans are not included. These activity worksheets can be used in addition to your own lesson plans and in such a way that best meets the needs of your students.

Toxic and inconsiderate behaviors involve creating drama, dragging people down, manipulating or controlling others, being needy and making it all about you, using others to meet your personal needs, and being critical and judgmental of one’s self and others. These toxic and inconsiderate behaviors ultimately lead to negative effects including, but not limited to, holding people back from being happy, peaceful, and productive, causing unwelcoming feelings like stress, anger, depression, and sadness, which ultimately can harm one’s health, affect relationships, and overall sense of well-being. Many students (and adults) are oblivious to the toxic and inconsiderate behaviors and interactions they have with people in their lives.

✅ This resource includes 22 activities that exposes students to the wide range of toxic and inconsiderate behaviors that not only surround them, but that they experience everyday from people they interact with.

✅ The activities can be used to help students identify which toxic and inconsiderate behaviors are actually present in their lives, help them explore their own roles in toxic interactions, build awareness of it, and practice using strategies to navigate toxic and inconsiderate behaviors.

✅ Students are also encouraged to understand the root causes of toxic behaviors. By understanding the root causes for toxic behaviors, attitudes, and habits, students can practice building their social awareness and empathy skills and respond appropriately, rather than in such a way that can cause potential problems.

Negative thoughts have a profound effect on students’ academic and social successes, behaviors, emotions, self-esteem, and happiness. Negative thinking and self-talk can hold them back and keep them from their full potential. In cognitive behavioral therapy, there are dozens of thinking errors that cause the mind to believe things that are just not true. Empower students to escape negative thinking by guiding them to reframe negative, faulty thoughts to positive thoughts. These engaging, highly relevant activities can support you in helping your students develop this critical life skill: the ability to take notice of their thoughts, to step back and view the “bigger” picture, and to decide how to act based on that more realistic perspective.

★ Excellent for mature 8th graders - High School Students

*******************************

Peer pressure is real and all too common! Teens constantly experience all kinds of peer pressure both in and out of school. Peer pressure can ultimately affect teens' decision-making. It's often hard to navigate difficult situations and say "no," especially when there is a strong human need to fit in and feel important.

This resource focuses on negative peer pressure, providing opportunities for teachers, educators, counselors, and parents to help students:

★ make better decisions when it comes to awkward or difficult situations

★ say "no" when they have to

★ think before they act

★ consider possible consequences of their decisions

Additionally, the scenarios in the activities allow opportunities for you to teach your students exit strategies or ways to say "no" to negative pressures.

Together, you can think through strategies on how to deal with those situations and scenarios if they arise. This can be done by discussing the scenarios and even role-playing. It is helpful to think about these things ahead of time rather than dealing with situations as they occur or trying to recover after they happen.

Practicing to say “no” in a variety of ways and in a variety of situations will prepare them for real life situations.

The activities and scenarios encourage students to think about and practice how to:

navigate difficult situations and challenges with peers and close friends.

practice and suggest ways to say ”no.”

have difficult conversations with the very people they spend a great deal of time with.

articulate their feelings clearly and appropriately in situations that make them feel uncomfortable.

build confidence in managing their emotions in awkward or tense situations.

These two passages, which come with their own activties and worksheets, depict a high school teen's academic challenges through contrasting reactions to feedback. James faces academic critiques, and each passage showcases his different responses and behaviors to this feedback. The storyline remains consistent in each passage; however, the character's reactions, actions, and behaviors to the academic feedback he received differ. One passage illustrates a positive growth mindset, while the other portrays a negative, fixed mindset.

In these two passages depicting James's experiences, we observe contrasting responses to challenges. In the first passage, James reacts with intense disappointment upon learning that his project did not meet the assignment's criteria. His emotional reaction leads to defiance and a refusal to embrace opportunities for improvement, resulting in strained interactions with his teacher and mother and a sense of isolation from his friends.

In the second passage, James demonstrates resilience by initially feeling disappointed but quickly regaining composure. He accepts constructive feedback from his teacher and is supported by encouraging words from his mother. Unlike in the first passage, where he reacts with defiance and withdrawal, James in the second passage shows determination to learn from his mistakes and redo his project to meet the required criteria. This resolve highlights his growth mindset and willingness to face challenges head-on, emphasizing the importance of persistence and a positive attitude in overcoming setbacks.

EACH Reading Passage Packet includes the following items:

✅ One Reading Passage

✅ 2 Reading Passage Vocabulary Sheets

★ Variation #1 - Vocabulary Words already defined. This worksheets includes the definitions of Vocabulary Words in the reading passage. This can be used to differentiate for students. You can give students this worksheet to refer to vocabulary words they do not know the meaning of to enhance their comprehension of the reading passage.

★ Variation #2 - Vocabulary Words are NOT defined. There will be a list of vocabulary words from the passage listed on the worksheets. Students will define words they do not know the meaning of.

✅ 2 Note-taking Worksheets

There are 2 Note-taking Worksheets to choose from. They are visually appealing! They can be distributed to students to take important notes during class discussions or during their reading of the passage.

✅ Question Worksheet (Consists on 5 Questions on ONE page)

✅ 5 Question Worksheets (One question on EACH worksheet)

There is ONE worksheet that includes 5 questions related to the reading. You can have students complete all five questions on one page, or you can have students complete one question at a time. The same 5 questions are also included on separate worksheets for a more detailed response. (One question per worksheet!)

☆ DETAILED Answer Keys | Sample Responses

✅ Anticipation Guide (2 Variations)

The Anticipation Guide includes statements and ideas related to the topic/themes of the reading passage. Anticipation guides are excellent tools that can be used before reading to activate students' prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic and/or to share ideas about key concepts. Students respond to several statements that challenge or support their preconceived ideas about key concepts as well as their peers’ ideas. The Anticipation Guides can help structure meaningful conversations that reviews what students already know and engages them in critical thinking about the topic they will be exploring. The statements in the Anticipation Guides can spark some great discussions among students!!

You can use an Anticipation Guide:

  • Before/after introducing new material to tap into prior knowledge
  • Before/after reading a short text to begin a discussion
  • Before/After discussing a topic

Activity Worksheets (to complete before and after reading the passage)

This packet also includes a myriad of Activity Worksheets both text-based and non text-based (Anticipated Guide included) that students can complete before and after reading the passage. Anxiety is a common human reaction involving the mind and body, marked by feelings of uneasiness, nervousness, worry, fear, or dread about what's coming up or might happen. It acts like an internal alarm system, triggering when someone senses danger or threat. Lately, we've observed an uptick in anxiety among our students, especially teens who are dealing with various stressors.

While it's typical for teenagers to feel concerned during busy and complicated times, it becomes problematic when these worries take over their lives. Unmanaged anxiety can impact students' ability to perform well and handle everyday tasks with a sense of calm. It's essential to teach all students, not just those who are particularly anxious, how to effectively cope with their emotions and anxieties. This helps contribute to their overall well-being and gives them tools to navigate life's challenges more successfully.

This packet includes 36 Anxiety Activity Worksheets along with comprehensive Answer Keys. These worksheets offer a range of activities addressing anxiety, worry, and nervousness, offering valuable assistance in guiding your students towards practicing positive coping strategies for handling anxious feelings. Through engaging scenarios and examples, students can enhance their emotional control skills in practical and relevant ways.
