Romeo and Juliet FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE ACTIVITY: Glossary, Quiz, Answer Key

By Rigorous Resources for High School English

Looking for a figurative language activity for William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet? This resource invites students to identify various types of figurative language found in Romeo and Juliet. The resource features a glossary with definitions of 7 types of figurative language as well as examples of how they're used in passages from the play. The resource also includes a three-page quiz in which students have to identify the type of figurative language used in each of 40 quotations from Romeo and Juliet. For teachers, the resource features an answer key that will enable you to grade students' quizzes quickly and efficiently.

Here's what you'll find in this editable 7-page resource:

  • Glossary of Figurative Language: The glossary features definitions for the 7 types of figurative language which appear most prominently in Romeo and Juliet: metaphor, simile, paradox, oxymoron, personification, apostrophe, and hyperbole. The glossary also includes examples of how Shakespeare uses each type of figurative language in passages from early scenes in the Romeo and Juliet. So you'll be able to review the types of figurative language with students before they've finished the play — and before they take the quiz. (1 page)
  • Quiz on Figurative Language: The quiz challenges students to identify 7 types of figurative language — metaphor, simile, paradox, oxymoron, personification, apostrophe, and hyperbole — used across 40 quotations from Romeo and Juliet. (3 pages)
  • Answer Key: The answer key provides the correct answer for each question on the quiz. Having an answer key will enable teachers to grade and return the quiz with speed and efficiency. (3 pages)

This entire resource will come to you in two separate formats: Word Docs *and* PDFs. Because the Word docs are fully editable, you'll be able to customize them to match the skill levels of your students — year after year! If you don't have Microsoft Word, you'll still be able to access PDF versions — which are easy to navigate and quick to print.

Rigorous Resources is your one-stop shop for top-quality resources on William Shakespeare. Wishing you an amazing experience with teaching Romeo and Juliet. Song Playlist Project for Use with Any Novel - Rubric included

By Nemos Nook

Exciting End-of-Novel Song Playlist Project for Your Classroom!

Bring Literature to Life with Music!

Engage your students with this End-of-Novel Song Playlist Project. This creative and interactive assignment encourages students to dive deep into their favorite novels by connecting key story elements with popular songs. Perfect for middle and high school ELA classrooms, this project enhances comprehension, analysis, and critical thinking skills.

What’s Included:

  • Project Overview & Instructions: Clear guidelines for students on how to select songs and explain their relevance to the novel (this project can be done as a slide presentation or physical project - I usually give students the choice)
  • Rubric: A detailed rubric for easy grading, ensuring consistency and fairness.

Why You’ll Love It:

  1. Engaging & Fun: Students will love the opportunity to blend their love of music with literature.
  2. Critical Thinking: Encourages deeper analysis of characters, themes, and plot developments.
  3. Creativity: Allows students to express their understanding in a creative and personalized way.
  4. Easy to Implement: Comes with everything you need to get started right away

I have used this project for novels such as F451, The Outsiders, Wednesday Wars, The Giver, etc.

Get your school scores up! I use this in my Government, United States History, and World History courses. My grade levels range from 6-8 and I have seen great increases with my students. Initiated at my previous school as a schoolwide curriculum (including Math), we went from an F to a C in 1 year alone. Now I am at a B school working with the low 25% students hoping to get their writing and reading scores to where they need to be. Go check it out.
