What type of economy do we live in? How does it affect our way of life, what we own, where we work, how we obtain resources, and how goods and services are produced? This resource will help your students understand the different types of economies and how each plays a role in cultures around the world.

Understanding economic systems — Traditional economy, market economy, command economy, and mixed economy — can influence the way we live, work, and obtain resources. Working in groups, students will engage themselves in completing task cards after a PowerPoint or Keynote introductory presentation. Through the task cards, students will understand the ways in which different economic systems work and then will be able to apply their knowledge to various economic scenarios while playing the class game of Monopoly. Finally, students will show what they have learned by filling out Economics Exit Cards.

This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. This lesson is easy enough for 5th graders to understand yet works well with students up to grade 12. Modifications can be made as needed.

Understanding the Four Economic Industries + Community Service Project

This cooperative learning economics industry and factor of production lesson addresses the four economic industries: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and quaternary Industries. A nation's economy can be divided into various sectors. Understanding these is important in understanding how our nation's economy works. Your students will have fun learning a lot about these industries!

A community service project is incorporated into this lesson. Students bring in food items such as cereal, canned goods, or anything that can be donated to a community food pantry. Make arrangements with the local food pantry to drop off or pick up the items. The items will be used for the lesson.

Students will use higher-level thinking skills to demonstrate how a product can begin in a Primary Industry and end up in the Quaternary Industry, and how each industry can play a vital part in how products are made and distributed.

This lesson will have students explore the two systems of ‘Capitalism’ and ‘Socialism’. Students will go beyond the surface level of understanding, and will be prompted to apply their knowledge of these two economic systems to a distant, isolated culture called ‘Ladakh’, who have been dramatically transformed by “development” or capitalism. Students will analyze a documentary film and identify examples of each economic system. Two critical thinking activities are included that will serve to demonstrate their new understandings and have students delve deeper into the economic & political dynamics shown in the film. 1) 'Loop/Web Diagram'- Students will show how the road coming into Ladakh has changed their culture and environment. 2) Debate- In this extension activity students will be assigned one of five perspectives; all of which were presented in the documentary. This activity will prompt students to rethink any assumptions and understandings they may have had tied to the concepts of progress, development, wealth and poverty. Your students will love this lesson, from 6th grade to 12th grade. The PowerPoint is included in the Zip File.

In 1980, China enforced the One-Child Policy Act to due to overpopulation issues as a result of Mao Zedong's policies, as he competed with Russia for power. Once he dies in 1979, China had to look at the population issues as there was a shortage of housing and resources— and they were continuing to multiply. Something had to be done, so the government enforce Martial Law and only allowed families to have one child.

However, now the One-Child Policy has created a downward shift in population, and as the older generation dies, the population is declining at significant rates. In 2016, to encourage population growth, China's government put in to play the Two-Child Policy pleading with its citizens, "Please have a second child". When that wasn't working, in 2021, they pass a Three-Child Policy.

This lesson examines and compares China's Child Policy Acts throughout the years and their effectiveness, also giving students the opportunity to provide their opinion of various scenarios.

OBJECTIVES:

• Understand the guidelines of the One-Child Policy Act, Two-Child Policy
  Act, and Three-Child Policy Act
• Examine the cause and effect of China's child policy acts
• Determine the effectiveness of each of China's child policy acts
• Understand Population Density

Divide students into groups/teams of three. Give each team member an article to read:

DEBATING CHINA’S CHILD POLICIES CLASS ACTIVITY (POWERPOINT)
Students will be given various scenarios via PowerPoint to which they will "Agree" or "Disagree". They will work with their classmates to present reasons for their decision.

Poaching is an illegal act of hunting, capturing, or killing animals and plants without permission from the authorities and is an environmental issue and selling ivory tusks, fur, and other resources for profit. Throughout the world today, animals, plants, and our environment overall are facing poaching issues. What does this look like and what does it mean for our species and their future? What does it mean for us? Take a look at various endangered animals and plants that are facing poaching through an introductory PowerPoint.

Animals that are typically poached, such as rhinoceroses, elephants, tigers, and bears sell at very high prices for profit.

Plants that are endangered and in danger of being poached for profit are wild ginger and cycad plants in South Africa to ginseng and venus fly traps are all under great threat at the hands of poachers.

Explore the poaching issues throughout the world and explore the underground trade system faced by Vietnam, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and India as well as many other nations, finding ways to create protection and environmental safety.

OBJECTIVES

• Students will become familiar with the types of poaching and trafficking throughout the world through an Introductory PowerPoint Presentation (Plants and animals)
• Students understand the dangers of poaching and trafficking to animals and the environment.
• Students will research different types of poaching around the world and will determine a working solution to the poaching problem.
• Students will write a proposal to an organization that protects endangered species/agriculture to persuade them to help fund their solution/plan to the poaching issue.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

· Introduction PowerPoint: The Killing Fields

· Internet, magazines, and books on poaching.

· Articles: The Killing Fields - Rhino or The Killing Fields – Pangolin (Included)

· The Killing Fields Activity Research Sheet (Included)

· Presentation Rubric (Included)

PROCEDURE:

Students will work in cooperative groups of 2-3 (or as an individual assignment, if the instructor wishes) to read one or both of the articles The Killing Fields - Rhino or The Killing Fields – Pangolin (Included). Allow students to discuss the articles as a class and ask questions. Students will begin their group activity.

Working in their teams and using the Student Activity Sheet: The Killing Fields (included), they will research species or agriculture that are being poached and trafficked around the world. Provide access to the Internet, articles, or books on poaching as sources of research. To save time, the instructor may wish to assign students a home assignment to students requiring them to bring in an article regarding poaching to save time.

CLOSURE:

Students will present their findings and proposals and will be graded via the grading rubric. (Included)
