NEED TO TEACH VOCABULARY IN YOUR MIDDLE OR HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM AND YOU'RE NOT SURE WHERE TO START?

You came to the right place! I have been teaching for 5+ years, I have my Master's in Education with a focus on Literacy and I didn't know where to start.

So, I went back to everything I learned in my graduate program and re-read everything I could find.

I wrote & designed a student-engaging template to help students in my classroom to deeply internalize a word. I gathered key word lists when I didn't have a word from our daily reading, and thought about how to teach vocabulary so my love of etymology and words could be shared with my 10th graders. I've included all that and a guide to help other teachers get started with implementing and teaching vocabulary in THEIR classrooms.

The Enlightenment Visual Vocab Essential Question: How did the ideas of Montesquieu and Locke influence the Founding Fathers? Directions: Provide a definition in your own words to each concept. Then draw a picture, symbol, or pictoword in each box representing concepts you learned in this lesson.

This is a list of vocabulary words from Hamlet as well as a vocabulary test. It comes with the answer key. There are a total of 20 words.

This is a list of vocabulary words from Othello as well as a vocabulary test. It comes with the answer key. There are a total of 20 words.

This simple graphic organizer can be used with ANY vocabulary words. Students can write in the words and definitions, then think of examples and non-examples for each word. This helps the students think about and discuss vocabulary throughout the lesson. The second page has another graphic organizer that can be used to make a poster about a specific vocabulary word. This can be used as a part of any lesson--I often use this as a differentiation tool for early-finishers or those struggling with a particular word. After posters are made, I use them as an adorable Word Wall!

Vocabulary Graphic Organizer: Example of Use 

Whenever I introduce vocabulary, I give the students the definitions and then ask them to find examples and non-examples. My favorite part of that class period is listening to students debate about topics such as whether zombies are an example of a resurrection or a nonexample. Because they're moving so they're like alive again kind of like resurrected, but they're Undead and Jesus wasn't Undead, he was alive again. Not the Living Dead. There's so much theology in that bizarre argument, I love it!
