AP Spanish Lesson Plans for the Whole Year without a Textbook + Test Prep

By Specialty Spanish

Back To School is here! The AP Spanish Language and Culture® Complete Lesson Plans for the Whole Year includes EVERYTHING you need to teach this course without being tied to a particular textbook!  Lesson plans are written by unit, and include specific, step-by-step instructions, # of minutes per activity, and every activity is linked into the lesson plans.  That means:

-no searching a folder for a particular activity!

-no searching the internet for authentic materials!

-no scrambling to make scaffolds and supports to make your materials accessible!

-no guesswork as to how or what to teach next!

Perfect for:

*Teachers teaching this course for the first time

*Teachers who need a refresh after teaching the course for a while

*Teachers feeling overloaded with all the responsibilities of the job

You can expect the following in each unit of study:

-a table that lists the types of activities and how many of each there are (view these in the previews)

-a table of learning objectives for each class for the entire unit (view these in the previews)

*Click HERE to download the learning objectives and activity count*

-Google Docs lesson plans with daily learning objectives, step-by-step instructions, teacher tips and explanations, and activities linked in

-embedded direct instruction and practice for the different parts of the AP Spanish® Exam

-Lessons organized by 3 45 minute periods and 1 90 minute period (our school uses a modified block schedule). The lesson activities are easy to move around to meet your school's schedule!

When we unexpectedly went to distance learning, I had to scramble as an AP Spanish® teacher. My students did not have access to their textbooks or the audio that went with it.  We used the Temas text, but I found that I had to adapt.  So, my lesson plans are now based almost entirely on authentic materials that I have found and curated.  I have created vocab lists around these materials and the activities that will go with them!  There are times during the lesson plans where I offer a suggestion from something that is found in the Temas textbook, but these lessons can be used fully without those suggestions.

Along with the honor of teaching our most advanced Spanish students comes the burden of heavy correcting and tons of planning.  We also have other preps.  Having an entire year’s worth of curriculum, lesson plans, projects and assessments ready to go will save you an incredible amount of time and relieve some of the pressure that we face as teachers.

In my classes, we also review grammar and use the Avance text as a guide.  I include a study guide and a grammar quiz in each unit, but the practice activities (if you want to review grammar in class) are not included.

Required Materials:

-Access to the Internet and Google Docs/Slides/Forms

-Access to AP Classroom® via College Board  (free to all AP ®Teachers)

Referenced ancillary materials (though not necessary)

-Temas textbook

-Avance Grammar textbook

-A test prep workbook (several are suggested in the plans, though not needed)

Here is some feedback about my unit plans!

Extremely satisfied

Thank you so much for creating these! They are so helpful to have in class. My students were very engaged.

Extremely satisfied

Amazing resource! I have already purchased Unit 2 and 3!

Extremely satisfied

Extremely well planned unit. Everything you need is included here. I teach 3 different levels of Spanish and it is hard for me to revamp lesson plans. We use the textbook TEMAS at my school site but the readings can be very dry. I like how this unit incorporates soooo many resources that are authentic.

I am definitely going to purchase more units. I wish there was a discounted bundle with all units because I would buy it!

Why should you trust me??

I have been teaching AP Spanish Language and Culture® since 2014 and have 24 years of teaching experience.  As I am still a classroom teacher, my activities and ideas evolve each year.  My students have done overwhelmingly well on the AP® exam over the years and almost all have earned the scores needed to get college credit, with many receiving 4’s and 5’s. I am successfully teaching this course in conjunction with the University of CT as another way for students to earn college credit. My former students report taking Spanish classes at the college/university level and having a high level of success!

Spanish Interpersonal Speaking 16 Activities for Conversations by Common Themes

By Specialty Spanish

Are your students hesitant to speak in Spanish in class? Are conversations and interpersonal speaking challenging for them? Are you worried about how to prepare them for tests like the Seal of Biliteracy and AP Spanish Exams? Do you teach multiple levels of Spanish? Then this bundle is for you!

This bundle contains 16 activities and 8 of the most common themes taught in every curriculum!

  • Childhood
  • Daily Routines
  • Clothing and Shopping
  • Food and Restaurants
  • Travel and Vacations
  • Accidents and Injuries
  • The Future
  • The Environment

There are 8 Guided Conversation activities. Guided Conversations provide a general outline for students to use. It helps them keep the conversation going with a partner so they can continue to create with language! They are differentiated between Novice High and Intermediate versions. The Novice versions have helpful vocabulary on their guides. And they can be used and re-used over and over! Switch partners, switch roles, use them at different points in the unit... and use them as review for more advanced students! Teacher notes make these a breeze to use!

There are 8 Integrated Listening and Speaking activities. The themes are the same 8 themes as the Guided Conversations. These ILS activities contain audio links. Students listen and then record their response. These activities are very much like the AAPPL and STAMP tests and are a great pre-cursor for the Simulated Conversation on the AP Spanish test. The audio links are already recorded for you, but the teacher script is also included in case you want to record your own voice, or show students what they heard when going over their responses. Each theme has 2 activities. There are 5 audio prompts in each (so a total of 10 per theme.) The 2nd activity is meant to be a bit more challenging. You can use that to differentiate for students, or use the 2nd activity later in the unit!

Who Can Use This Resource:

  • Students in Year 2 and up (Novice High and Intermediate)

How Do I Use This Resource?

  • The included teacher notes will provide all of these suggestions
  • Students will work in partners with guided conversations
  • Students can switch roles and also switch partners with the guided conversations to make them reusable countless times!
  • Students work alone with the ILS activities
  • They listen and respond, and record their responses
  • These activities can be used for practice or for assessment
  • They are all ready to print or post- no teacher prep!

What's Included?

  • Teacher Notes for Both Kinds of Activities to explain exactly how to use them
  • 8 Guided Conversation Themes (Each theme has 4 conversations included, so there are a total of 32 conversations)
  • 8 Integrated Listening and Speaking Activities (ILS) (Each theme has 2 activities with 10 prompts: so 16 activities and 160 prompts)

AP Spanish Lesson Plans Unit 2 Identidad Digital or Printable Complete Unit

By Specialty Spanish

New to teaching AP® Spanish Language and Culture?  Consider your Unit 2 Lesson Plans (La influencia de la lengua y la cultura en la identidad) done!  These digital AND printable lesson plans have nearly every activity you will need linked in.  Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Activities that combine 2 skills, homework, assessments and even projects are all included! Students will learn how to complete the AP Exam Argumentative Essay and Simulated Conversation in this unit as well as practice the reading and listening multiple choice style questions.  Best of all, these lesson plans do NOT require that you have a particular textbook!

Teaching a new course, or even trying to revamp a course you’ve taught for a while can be overwhelming.  These complete unit lesson plans will take you through the entire 2nd unit for The Influence of Language and Culture on Identity starting with a “Hook Activity” to spark interest and then the essential questions, vocabulary list and grammar study guide you will need to get started. Every activity (over 60!) you need (with the exception of 4) is linked in.  Your prep will be limited to reviewing the lesson plans and sources ahead of your students, but the searching for appropriate authentic materials and creating accompanying activities is already done for you! Download the learning objectives and activity count here!

I am fortunate to have several textbook resources including Temas, AP Spanish Preparing for the Language and Culture Examination and Avance.  In these lesson plans I make use of these textbooks for 4 out of 60+ activities.  However, especially after teaching on-line for a year, I have moved away from relying on textbooks and I create most of the activities myself. This makes these lesson plans very versatile and usable for anyone!  For teachers who need or like to teach digitally, all of the activities in this bundle can be assigned via Google Classroom or other learning management system. And almost every activity is also printable for teachers and students who prefer paper copies.  Best of all, once you have these activities in your Google Drive, you can edit and adapt anything to suit your needs!

I have been teaching AP® Spanish Language and Culture since 2014 and have 24 years of teaching experience.  My students have done overwhelmingly well on the AP® exam over the years and almost all have earned the scores needed to get college credit, with many receiving 4’s and 5’s. I also teach this course as an Early College Experience in collaboration with the University of CT, as another way for students to earn college credit.

I start the year with a set of lesson plans designed to last one week.  It is linked below.  We do all the paper-passing, signing up for different apps and classrooms, and become comfortable with the course and our classmates.  We also present our summer homework, also linked below.  Next I teach Unit 1: Families in Different Societies. This unit starts as if all of the beginning of the year “housekeeping” has been done already.   That resource is also linked below.  AP teachers are allowed to teach the units in any order they would like, but I recommend that if you plan to use this series of lesson plans, that you go in order. I choose to introduce the AP test open-ended tasks over time so that students are not overwhelmed.  By unit 3, they will have learned the purpose, rules and resources for all of the tasks and can spend the last 3 units practicing them some more.

Consider asking your district to buy this product for you!

By Specialty Spanish

Ready to start AP® Spanish Unit 6: Environmental, Political and Social Challenges? (Los retos ambientales, políticos y sociales) Your entire unit’s lesson plans are done!  These digital AND printable lesson plans have nearly every activity you will need linked in.  Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Activities that combine 2 skills, Homework, Assessments, AP® Exam Style activities and even Projects are all included!  The 2 main focuses are on climate change and immigration.  You will find vocabulary, grammar, relevant videos and articles, a debate project, Edpuzzles and more in this bundle. This is the last unit in the AP® Classroom curriculum. (In my Units 1-4 plans, all of the parts of the AP® Exam have been introduced with direct instruction.)

Best of all, these lesson plans do NOT require that you have a particular textbook!  Everything you need is provided!

Teaching a new course, or even trying to revamp a course you’ve taught for a while is extremely time consuming.  These complete unit lesson plans will take you through the entire 6th unit for Global Challenges  starting with a “Hook Activity” using provocative images to spark interest and thought, and then the essential questions, vocabulary list and grammar study guide that you will need to get started. There are activities related to Climate Change and Immigration.  Every activity (over 58!) you need (with the exception of 2) is linked in.

In these lesson plans I make use of these textbooks for 2 out of 58+ activities. (They are grammar practices, but I provide the study guide and quiz, so you can easily make or find practices to go with these!)  However, especially after teaching on-line for a year, I have moved away from relying on textbooks and I create most of the activities myself. This makes these lesson plans very versatile and usable for anyone!  For teachers who need or like to teach digitally, all of the activities in this bundle can be assigned via Google Classroom or other learning management system. This unit (Unit 6) starts as if all of the beginning of the year “housekeeping” has been done already and logically follows units 1, 2, 3 and 4 and 5 where I present all the different tasks of the AP Spanish Exam.   The previous unit plans are also linked below.  AP® teachers are allowed to teach the units in any order they would like, but I recommend that if you plan to use this series of lesson plans, that you go in order. I choose to introduce the AP test open-ended tasks over time so that students are not overwhelmed.  By unit 3, they will have learned the purpose, rules and resources for all of the tasks and can spend the last 3 units practicing them some more. This last unit is designed to fit into the often chaotic end of the school year with its many interruptions.

There is a place within the lesson plans where I encourage a break from the unit to review for the AP® Exam. I have a schedule for review that I use with my students which I will link below.  If you are using this unit at a different point in the year, you can go through the unit without pause!

This unit (Unit 4) starts as if all of the beginning of the year “housekeeping” has been done already and logically follows units 1, 2 and 3 where I present all the different tasks of the AP® Spanish Exam.   The previous unit plans are also linked below.  AP®teachers are allowed to teach the units in any order they would like, but I recommend that if you plan to use this series of lesson plans, that you go in order. I choose to introduce the AP® test open-ended tasks over time so that students are not overwhelmed, though it is not a necessity if you have your own way of preparing students for the AP® Exam..  By unit 3, they will have learned the purpose, rules and resources for all of the tasks and can spend the last 3 units practicing them some more.

Need an example before you buy?  I don't blame you!  Feel free to email me or visit my website's free resource library. (links below)  I have a FREE Unit 3 Day 1 lesson plan for the Influences of Beauty and Aesthetics.  It will give you a sense of how I organize my daily lesson plans and the quality of my work.

I am fortunate to have several textbook resources including Temas, AP Spanish Preparing for the Language and Culture Examination and Avance.   In these lesson plans I make use of these textbooks for 4 out of 60+ activities. But in the few cases that I’ve used these resources in the lesson plans, I have included links to alternatives.

Spanish 2 & Spanish 3 Travel Unit: 6 Weeks of Lesson Plans for Travel, Vacation

By Specialty Spanish

Are you teaching a Spanish 2 or 3 unit about Travel and Vacations?  Exhausted from creating all of the activities your students need to be successful?  This unit called “Nuestras vacaciones” includes EVERYTHING you need to teach this unit, without a specific textbook! Reading, writing, speaking, listening and cultural activities are all included, along with step by step lesson plans, homework assignments, assessments and answer keys.  Save your time and energy for the millions of other things teachers must do!

Being a new teacher or even teaching a new course can be so overwhelming and so time consuming.  Even districts that have textbooks don’t always provide all of the individual activities students need for practice in building both performance and proficiency.  These lesson plans are designed for about 5 weeks (5 classes a week) for any curriculum teaching about travel and vacations and the past (preterite) tense. They are written day by day, week by week, in a logical sequence.  Each activity is linked into the lesson plans, so you don’t need to go searching for what you need.  Everything is made with Google Docs or Google Slides, so you can modify if you want or need to change anything!

These lesson plans combine all of the best practices of World Language Instruction.  Grammar is embedded into comprehensible input, but specific notes and practices for grammar are also provided.  There are TONS of contextualized practices to increase proficiency, but there are also discrete practices to help students memorize vocabulary and endings to help them along faster! I try to marry performance (being able to communicate on a very specific topic) with proficiency (a person’s overall ability to communicate).

Preview, print or post, and go!

Check out the learning objectives and activity count here!

All of these activities are included in these lesson plans, along with many more which cannot be bought separately.

Why should you trust me?  I have 23 years of experience as a high school Spanish teacher in years 1, 2, 3, 4 and AP Spanish.   I have taught both with and without textbooks.  Once the pandemic hit and we did not have access to our resources at school, I created most of the materials my students needed on my own. I love designing lesson plans and student activities that are based on growing proficiency and setting students up for success!  I am happy to answer questions and help with any needs as you work through these lesson plans.

Preterite vs Imperfect Tense 6 Spanish Fairy Tale Stories Bundle Emergency Sub Plans

By Senorita Creativa

Do your students struggle with the preterite vs imperfect tenses? Then this amazing fairy tale bundle is just what you've been looking for! This awesome resource with six fairy tales is an easy-to-use and low-prep way to practice the preterite and the imperfect, along with reading comprehension skills.

Students love these stories because they are stories that they are already familiar with, making them more comprehensible, turning this tricky grammar topic from dry and boring to engaging and fun! By purchasing this amazing double bundle, you are saving 25% off the price of the individual resources!

This bundle includes six of my classic fairy tale sets in the past tense:

  • Cenicienta (Cinderella) - compatible with Google Classroom™
  • Blancanieves (Snow White) - compatible with Google Classroom™
  • Rapunzel
  • Caperucita Roja (Little Red Riding Hood) - compatible with Google Classroom™
  • Los Tres Cerditos (The Three Little Pigs) - compatible with Google Classroom™
  • Ricitos de Oro (Goldilocks) - compatible with Google Classroom™

It’s a perfect way to practice and assess your students’ knowledge of the preterite and imperfect tenses in Spanish.

This file includes two versions of each story:

  • Version A has the verbs already conjugated, and the students must choose between the preterite and imperfect tenses of the verb.
  • Version A also includes true/false comprehension questions and students must correct the false statements.
  • Version B includes only the infinitive, so they must first decide which tense to use and then fill in the blank with the correct form of the verb.
  • Version B also includes comprehension questions to be answered in complete sentences in Spanish.

Each story is 2-3 pages long. An answer key for both versions of each story is included in the download. The two different versions make differentiation simple!

Each story includes:

  • a mini pictorial vocab list in color and black & white
  • a mini-PowerPoint (great for pre-teaching key vocabulary)
  • a blank six-box storyboard (great for students to illustrate their comprehension of the story)
  • answer keys for the stories AND the comprehension questions
  • teacher tips page.

All of these great resources are included as a zipped file. Make sure to download the preview to see everything included!

These stories would make great emergency sub plans (10-12 days’ worth of material), homework assignments, or formative assessments. These stories are great for Spanish 2 or as a review of the Preterite vs Imperfect tenses at the beginning of Spanish 3 or 4.
