Short Intermediate French reading comprehension worksheets - Vampires

By Frenchified

Are you looking to take your French students' reading skills to the next level? Then these short non-fiction French reading passages could be just what you need! Designed specifically for students who are at A2/novice-high level, these readings provide an effective way of moving towards the B1/intermediate-low benchmark.

Each passage is roughly 300-350 words long, with a handy glossary that follows each one to help with any unfamiliar words or phrases. This means you can expand their vocabulary and hone their reading skills without worrying about getting stuck on unknown terms. And with a range of topics covered – from historical accounts to wild animals – there’s something for everyone, no matter what you’re interested in learning!

This item is for a free sample of these short reading passages. This passage is about vampires.

Each reading is on one page and includes an image about the topic, a short glossary of less-common words, and 2-4 question in English to check for comprehension. An answer key is included.

Use the readings for independent reading practice, bell work, reading assessments, or class practice. They can also be used for sub plans.

French Getting to Know You BINGO!

By Churros and Croissants

This BINGO card is a great ice breaker for the first days of French class! Each student receives a card and then moves around the classroom meeting new people and asking questions in English to get to know them better. When they find someone who can say "Oui" to a box, they will cross it off and write that person's name on it. The first person to get a BINGO reads their card out loud so the class can get to know their new friends as well!

This activity is designed for students with no previous French knowledge (MS French, Intro to Languages, Foundations of French, and French I), but my returning French 2 students loved it as well.

Tu préfères - 10 French graphics for "this or that" type questions FREEBIE

By Frenchified

Do you start off your class with a quick poll or check-in question? This set of graphics can be used from day one to get students using French. This sampler has 10 different graphics that you can use in Desmos, Nearpod, Peardeck, or on a social media post to get input from your students. Each graphic gives them a choice of two different things. You can use it in different levels by adjusting the task.

Level 1 - from the beginning, you can have them just choose between option A and option B. Get lots of comprehensible input by having a class discussion about who prefers what. Later on, have them write complete sentences starting with "je préfère."

Level 2 - have students start to add more detail to their responses. Tell them to include details - where, when, with whom. Have them write more complex sentences explaining why they prefer something.

Level 3 - have students make their choice and then talk about the last time they ______.

Some graphics have very basic vocabulary, some have more advanced items - but all are easy to understand due to the images. There are also some cultural graphics mixed in.

If you like the freebie sampler of 10, there is another set of 190 - so you'd have enough to make it through the entire school year using one per day!

French TV commercial analysis - differentiated activities

By Frenchified

This is a FREE activity to accompany a French TV commercial - any French TV commercial!

Choose a commercial that you think is cute, funny, interesting, or that students will be able to understand and assign the worksheet.  Students will determine the answers to basic and some more advanced questions about the commercial. Questions include finding information about the product, the target customer, where to find more information, the price, method of selling, and whether or not you would buy the product.

There are three different versions of the activity - use the one that matches your students' level of ability with the language.

  • Level 1 - all questions are in English.
  • Level 2 - all questions are in French, most of them are check the box type questions with descriptive vocabulary and two open ended questions
  • Level 3 - all questions are in French, all open-ended for students who are able to write in French.

You can use this activity again and again, choosing whatever TV commercials you like!

My suggestion for finding TV commercials is CulturePubTV - YouTube

French Comprehensible Input Story - Le Mauvais Espion

By Frenchified

Are you looking to improve student comprehension and proficiency in French?  This French comprehensible input short story is a fun sample of what can be done with French CI instruction.  It is a sampler from the series of French CI units, available for level 1 and level 2 French.

This short story is for French learners who are just starting their studies. Very simple language with lots of repetition - but the story itself is interesting enough to hold their attention. It is the unit story that finishes unit 1 of the CI unit series - each unit uses comprehensible input to give your students a base of frequently used vocabulary words with some basic structures.  At the end of the unit, students should be able to easily read and understand the story - and with practice, they can retell the story as well.

These units are especially helpful if you want to use CI but:

  • You are required to use a district textbook
  • You need a little bit of structure as you get your feet wet with comprehensible input
  • You are required to give a district final, but want to use CI to teach your classes

The units are complete units with vocabulary and grammar in context - they cover the same material as the standard textbook programs, only with a more comprehensible input focus.

This free story can be used as a standalone activity as early as the first semester of French.

Includes:

  • short story in French
  • comprehension questions
  • story retell activity
  • mp4 animated video of the story

This story is part of the Bonjour! Comprehensible input unit 1 for beginning French. This will give you an idea of what the units are like - each unit builds up to a unit story based on the vocabulary and grammar of the unit.
