Cochlear Implant Surgery Workbook for Deaf HOH

By Sign with me TOD

In this product, students will learn about the process of receiving cochlear implants. They can add a picture of themselves to the first page of the booklet. Students will learn or review what steps are needed to receive cochlear implants - a hearing test, going for a scan to determine if cochlear implants would benefit a Deaf individual, going to the hospital to have cochlear implant surgery, a doctor called an otolaryngologist performs cochlear implant surgery, and what happens after surgery, when cochlear implants are turned on and mapped.

Students will review how they can care for their cochlear implants upon receiving them - charging them, putting them in their case when they are not being used, and where they should not go.

Students will be able to draw a picture of themselves wearing their cochlear implant(s). Students can then circle the color of their cochlear implants on the sheets provided. If the color of their cochlear implant is not included in the product, students can color the cochlear implants(s) pictures to show what they look like. At the end of this section, students will complete a fill in the blanks and true/false vocabulary review based on what was covered in the product.

Students will then learn about facts about hearing loss and Deafness - Examples: some people wear one hearing aid, one cochlear implant, two cochlear implants, etc., some people who are Deaf and have cochlear implants may use American Sign Language to communicate, the parts of the ear are reviewed - outer ear, ear canal, eardrum, cochlea, and auditory nerve, and how they work together to help someone hear. Students will label the parts of an ear diagram that is included in this product, identify the differences between hearing aids and cochlear implants, learn the different parts of the internal and external components of cochlear implants and where they are located using a diagram. Students will have the opportunity to again complete a fill in the blanks using a key to review what was learned about hearing aids and cochlear implants, and label a cochlear implant using a key. Students will review how the parts of the cochlear implant work together that allows them to hear. Sound fields and FM systems are also reviewed in this product.

At the end of the product, there are three slides that include the sign language and pictures to help students understand the process that takes place to when having cochlear implant surgery and once surgery has been completed.

AAC Visuals I Need My Device Prompt Card | AAC Autonomy | Low Tech AAC Therapy | Autism & Special Education Resources

By Colourful Communicators

AAC/DEVICE - PROMPT CARD/REMINDER FOR OTHERS.

A practical and effective visual tool to increase independence for AAC users and support them in advocating for themselves and their 'voice' when they don't have access to their device. Our non speaking learners can often experience times where their device/AAC tool is in their bag or out of reach and their teachers/carers haven't thought to retrieve it for them. In instances like this, they may not be able to communicate that they need their device and sadly, miss out on many opportunities to engage, participate and express their needs, thoughts, and ideas.

Having this simple prompt card/reminder provides learners with a way of getting someone's attention and accessing their 'voice'.

Print, laminate, and attach to their desk, wheelchair, wall, visual schedule, or lanyard/keychain- anywhere that is easily accessible for them!

2 options available- 'I need my device please' and 'I need my AAC'. 4 sizes available for each option.

Please feel free to email me if you are looking for particular sizing or visual, and I will see what I can do :-) - colourfulcommunicationtherapy@gmail.com

Please remember to place feedback and check out/follow my store for lots more wonderful resources and visual supports!

Thank you! :-)

Think it, Say it, Rephrase it: Emotional Regulation Social Filter SEL Activity

By Teach Social Skills

Teach your students the nuances of communication.

They will learn how to differentiate things that they would say aloud, keep to themselves or try to rephrase in a more considerate way. They will also think critically about how context may change meanings.

Excellent for social-awareness as they think about how their words affect others. When they think about rephrasing, it encourages students to think about alternative ways to express the same idea. This increases self-awareness and self-expression skills and creativity.

This is perfect for:

  • Special educators
  • Behaviorists (BCBAs, RBTs, ABA Therapists)
  • Counselors
  • Speech therapists

In the settings of:

  • Social Skills Groups
  • Autism Classrooms
  • Group Speech therapy
  • Counseling sessions
  • Upper elementary, middle, high school and special education

What people are saying!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Very easy to use in speech sessions. Engaging with my students. I use this resource all the time.

Included:

  • 35 different comments or questions
  • Brainstorming worksheet for weighing pros and cons
  • Reflection worksheet for after the lesson
  • 2 sets of headings for "Think it", "Say it" and "Rephrase it"
  • 10 "context" text strips (e.g. "to a good friend") to see how context changes how we communicate

No judgements and no correct answers here! Let the kids explore what they think and get peer to peer feedback.
