These units are focused on close reading in history/social studies, primarily in the discipline of history, and using text-dependent questions to help students gain a deeper understanding of informational texts. Unit 3 will offer suggestions for how to implement FL CCSS in the other related disciplines of civics, economics, and geography. Why Close Reading Now? I wear a variety of professional hats—Department Head, Social Studies Coach, Youth In Government Advisor, Interactive Notebook Team member for the District, Chromebook Leader, tech Leader, School Based Leadership Team, AVID Tutor, and most of all Teacher. To keep myself honest (and humble), I spend a lot of time in classrooms watching kids and teachers at work. During the past few years, I've observed a transformation in the teaching of reading from an approach that measured readers' successful understanding of text through lengthy packets of comprehension questions to one that requires students to think about their thinking, activating their "good reader" strategies. The National Assessment of Educational Progress even made one of those strategies—making reader/text connections—a thinking strand within its framework (National Assessment Governing Board, 2002). Australian Battles WW1 - IOS/Android App Rich activity. slides, worksheet

Looking for a comprehensive no prep and engaging middle school and high school grade IT activity and worksheet activity to boost history student knowledge and understanding on WW1. This ready-to-use worksheet for iOS/Android app ro webpage links is your solution. This has been massively updated and improved from the earlier version.
Using the app developed by the ABC Australia. Students use the app (Website if not accessible) to compete a summary of the selected battle. The students then share their findings to allow the entire pro forma to be completed or extend the task to research each individually.
The activity includes;
The activities included on the provided Australian First World War Battles: Immersive Battle Experience worksheets are as follows:
1.Links to Resources: Students can access multimedia content through QR codes or direct web links to enrich their learning experience about the battles.
2. Battle-Focused Questions: For each battle (Fromelles, Pozieres, Polygon Wood, 1st Passchendaele, and Beersheba), students answer specific questions such as:
- The objective of the battle.
- Significant geography/topography of the battlefield.
- Allied forces involved.
- The Australian commander during the battle.
- Defenses facing Australians.
- Significance of the battle in the context of the war.
- Whether the objective was achieved.
- Territory gained (in meters).
- Australian casualties.
- Australian cost in casualties per meter gained.
3. Graphing Task: Students are tasked with creating a graph to compare Australian casualties in three key theaters of World War I: Fromelles, Polygon Wood, and Beersheba, to determine which was most costly to Australia.
4. Trench Warfare: Students use a Venn diagram to compare characteristics of Australian and German trenches and provide evidence/examples of each characteristic from provided resources.
5. Weapons/Tactics of 1916-17: Students identify the strengths and limitations of various weapons and tactics used during the war, such as artillery, barbed wire, machine guns, and more.
6. Reflective Writing: There is a reflective writing task where students write a 150-word argument on the statement: "The German fortifications and defenses were far superior to those of the British at Fromelles and/or Pozieres."
These activities are designed to promote engagement with historical content through interactive, analytical, and reflective learning.

Globalization and Interdependence describes the relationships of mutual dependence between all elements and life forms (including humans) within and across cultures, environments, and social systems. Today, more than ever before, globalization and interdependence are part of our everyday local lives. We are linked to others on every continent even if we don't realize it. We are linked through social media and telecommunications, the movement of people and ideas (culture), international trade, the environment as we share the planet, and through international political relations and regulations. The easiest way to teach interdependence no matter one's age is to address international trade.
