10th Grade Religion Lesson

Geography, World Religions Task Card Cooperative Activity

By Geography & Math Made Easy

This lesson is easy enough for 5th graders to understand yet works well with students up to 12th grade. Modifications can be made as needed.

Need a great lesson to review or introduce world religions to your students that they will enjoy? Get students up, moving, and learning!

This lesson addresses the following religions:

  • Christianity
  • Buddhism
  • Islam
  • Taoism
  • Confucianism
  • Judaism

It also addresses concepts such as:

  • Polytheism
  • Monotheism
  • Atheism
  • Religious culture
  • Reincarnation
  • Holy books such as the Torah, Quran, Bible
  • Where religions are mostly practiced within the world
  • Religious believe if the afterlife
  • Religious symbols
  • And more

Students will work in cooperative groups and will rotate from one station to the next exploring the different aspects of world religions.

As an introductory activity, it would be helpful to have books available at each station or Internet access, so that students have an outlet to research the question posed.

As a review activity, simply have students rotate from one station to the other answering the review questions.

This allows students to collaborate to discuss and come to a conclusion on the answer. Students will not be left on their own but will have the opportunity to learn from their classmates. This lesson also incorporates movement in the classroom rather than asking them to remain in their seats for the hour-long or more class period.

INTRODUCTION

Show the 5 Major Religions YouTube video or a video of your choice to introduce Judaism, Islam, and Christianity—the three monotheistic religions.

COOPERATIVE LEARNING READING ACIVITY

Students will work in group to complete Venn diagram or comparison chart (students' choice) as they read "What You Need To Know About World Religions" packet on Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

REVIEW GAME:

Review Activity—Bingo Trading Cards

Provide each team with a Bingo Card. Each team will work together to create nine open-ended questions for their Bingo Cards related to the history, beliefs, and traditions of each of the religions being studied—Judaism, Islam and Christianity—but will leave the answer for each question blank. Students will have 10 minutes to work in their teams to develop and insert their open-ended questions.

Once students have finished developing and inserting all 9 questions (one per box), the game will begin. This is not a typical Bingo game. It is actually not Bingo at all. Students trade cards and roll dice to determine which question his/her team will attempt to answer. Once answered, they trade cards again and so on. Very fun and effective review game!

Students will complete one section at a time, and once they have correctly answered the section they are working on, they will be allowed to move on to the next section. They are given two opportunities to answer the questions correctly, earning points for each correct answer.

This lesson requires instructor active participation throughout the entire process as he/she will be continually assessing the students answers to give them points and the "go-ahead" to move to the next section. Student will be moving about the room and actively engaged in the learning process.

  • Provide a table in the front of the room with books students can use to assist in answering questions.
  • Provide Internet access stations for student to use.
  • Set a desk in the middle or front of the classroom with the teacher answer sheet. This is where the instructor will sit during the game scoring each section for points.

  • Teacher instruction
  • Vocabulary Sheet for Scavenger Hunt Preparation
  • Student Activity Sheets
  • Blank Answer Sheet (Optional)
  • Teacher Answer Key

Important Note: a Word document of the game has been included in the chance that you would like to change some of the questions to meet your needs. Note that based on the version of Word that you have, the original formatting may change. You will need to reformat in this case. This is why TeachShare encourages one to use only PDF formatting so as not to cause issues for the purchaser. However, I realize that it would be helpful if you, the purchaser, have the ability to change questions to correspond with what you wish your students to learn. You can find the Word document within the Zip file.

NEW! GEOGRAPHY: WORLD RELIGIONS PHOTO GALLERY WALK | WORLD RELIGION

By Geography & Math Made Easy

A photo gallery walk is a fun and engaging way to get your student actively involved in the learning process. Students will work together in teams or cooperative groups and will travel through 12 picture galleries learning about the different world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism among other religions. This is a great activity for an introductory lesson or for a reinforcement activity!

Covers the traditions and practices of the world’s most influential religions of the world: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islamism, Taoism, Animism, Shintoism, Monotheism, Polytheism & non-religions: Atheism, Agnosticism. The lesson teaches the difference between polytheistic and monotheistic religions.

OBJECTIVE:

  • The learner will become familiar with world religions’ cultural hearth, beliefs, and practices.
  • The learner will recognize and understand key terms of each world religion.
  • The learner will examine the beliefs, traditions, and customs of the major religions of the world.
  • The learner will determine the similarities and differences between each world religion.

MATERIALS:

  • Copies of each gallery, laminated for future use and durability. (Place these around the room or in the hall if more room is needed)
  • Use adhesive to adhere all 12 gallery sheets to the wall, spread out as if you were in a gallery.
  • Post-it notes for each group
  • A clipboard or a piece of paper for each group to place their sticky notes on as they move around the room.

INCLUDES:

  • Teacher Guide
  • Chart to display
  • 12 Galleries with images and explanations
  • Introduction guiding questions and suggested videos
(Suggested videos are simply suggestions, it will be up to the instructor to select a video if they choose to use one.)
  • Procedure activity along with the gallery walk
  • Exit tickets
  • Opt-out sample letter to parents

IMPORTANT NOTE:
World religions can be a sensitive topic. When presenting the religions and discussing them do not show any bias’ toward one religion. Remain neutral so as not to lean to accept one religion over the other. This is a factual lesson that helps students understand culture throughout the world as many cultural practices are relative to a specific religion within the region. You may have some parents who prefer their child to not be taught this within the classroom setting. If your district has a policy where parents can request their child not attend class during a sensitive topic, then send out a letter to all parents communicating that your class is starting a unit on world religions and have them sign it to opt-out or opt-in. Follow your district’s guidelines.
