Students read a non-fiction news article (included in the packet) and connect it to the book We Beat The Street. The lesson focuses on Chapter 3, George's relationship with his third grade teacher, Miss Johnson. This Pre-Reading Chalk Talk is a great no-prep activity that you can use to introduce the novel, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. This PRINTABLE and DIGITAL lesson is completed in small groups and is more interactive than any Anticipation Guide I’ve ever used! The graphic novel, Act by Kayla Miller is great for children ages 8 - 14, as they can relate with the characters. My students enjoyed this book because it is a book about friendship, being mature, supporting your friends, being a good sport, leader, etc., and solving problems with friends and in life. This book does not have chapters, so comprehension questions were separated by pages. Therefore, written comprehension skills are emphasized while reading. At the end of this product, there are a variety of short answer writing prompts to choose from.

The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and a few example sentences are presented in the packet. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet.
