10th Grade Government Lesson

Benchmark Resources Description SS.7.C.2.1 Define the term "citizen," and identify legal means of becoming a United States citizen. SS.7.C.2.2 Evaluate the obligations citizens have to obey laws, pay taxes, defend the nation, and serve on juries. Also Assesses: SS.7.C.2.3—Experience the responsibilities of citizens at the local, state, or federal levels. Also Assesses: SS.7.C.2.14—Conduct a service project to further the public good. This unit has interactive notebook pieces, assessments, and tons of paper based and technology based items. There are 21 items in this file that hits every part of the standards listed above. It includes a variety of lessons which meet multiple intelligences and different leveled learners. There is no extra work needed. Just pick and chose, print and go!

Civic Foundations of the US Government File Interactive Notebook Unit This Interactive Notebook file is filled with hook activities, processing activities, and EOC practice items for ALL four standards listed above. There are 35 pages filled with standard based learning activities for each of the FOUR standard topics listed above. Over the years with being Tech Leader for our school, along with Social Studies Department Head, Coach, Interactive Notebook Leader, and Civics teacher... I have become very talented in taking benchmarks, getting to the root of what is tested on within that benchmark and making lessons. Through the Universal Design Model and AVID, I have created great lessons, activities, DBQs, and practice EOC items that will make your life so much easier this school year. SS.7.C.1.1 Recognize how Enlightenment ideas including Montesquieu's view of separation of power and John Locke's theories related to natural law and how Locke's social contract influenced the Founding Fathers. SS.7.C.1.2 Trace the impact that the Magna Carta, English Bill of Rights, Mayflower Compact, and Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" had on colonists' views of government. SS.7.C.1.3 Describe how English policies and responses to colonial concerns led to the writing of the Declaration of Independence. SS.7.C.1.4 Analyze the ideas (natural rights, role of the government) and complaints set forth in the Declaration of Independence.

The purpose of this interactive notebook is to enable students to be creative, independent thinkers and writers. This forms & types of government interactive notebook has class notes as well as for other activities where the student will be asked to express his/her own ideas and process the information presented in class. This guided gradual release model walks students not only through the forms & types, but the Systems of Government as well. You literally don't have to make a single lesson for these two combined units. Requirements vary from teacher to teacher and has been set up according to the directions of the teacher (already been given, but can be altered in this 16 page long Microsoft Word document that you can alter if you would like. Pick and choose pages if you would like as well! It's all already done for you! The only think left for you to do is assess the students after they assess themselves in the learning goal chart found on page 16 that has the students motitor their own learning! Wow, amazing... I know. But the best part is the EOC Practice items to check their understanding as they go. PHEW! That's a lot of stuff for 16 pages... a lot of stuff that you now don't have to do if you purchase this awesome item.

Students will have a blast with this assignment! As students put their thoughts together to decide which world government types and systems — democracy, direct democracy absolute monarchy, consituational monarchy, oligarchy, etc — work best in various scenarios, they will become familiar with how government systems work. Encourage your students to think outside the box to problem solve and to do their best! Acquiring higher-level thinking skills is a process and a skill that has to be developed over time. Let's get our students thinking!

A Fun Semi-Silent Carousel Activity & PowerPoints to Engage Your Students!

Studying presidents and world leaders throughout the world is important because it allows us to understand the impact individuals can have on society and history. By examining the decisions and actions of past and current leaders, we can learn valuable lessons about leadership through this semi-silent carousel activity.

This is an engaging President's Day or world government activity on world leaders for geography, civic, and other social studies classrooms. Students get involved in the learning process and will learn about 15 presidents & leaders (past & present) around the world to understand the place. This can be used as an introductory before or wrap-up lesson following a World Governments unit. Students will recognize world leaders and understand how they played an important part in government and managing their countries — in both positive and negative ways.

(This lesson is easily modified for time restraints. Simply, choose fewer leaders to cover or remove one of the games. Can be modified for middle school and high school geography and history classrooms.)

What can Africa teach the world about government? Africa's government system has experienced various types of government from democracies to republics to autocracies. This is a comprehensive cooperative activity for students to explore the various governments of Africa while learning or reviewing the government systems. It can also be completed individually if the instructor chooses not to have students work in groups.

The lesson ends with a Big Picture Question: What can Africa teach the world about Government?

OBJECTIVES:

• Understand the structure of various African government systems.
• Compare and contrast African government systems.
• Decipher the difference between autocracy and democracy.
• Decipher the difference between parliamentary democracy and presidential democracy, as well as a parliamentary republic and presidential republic.
• Recognize that lines are often blurred when it comes to government systems and how they are function.

This lesson will require research provisions: Internet, encyclopedias, books on Africa focused on government.

SAMPLE OF PROCEDURE:

The students will work in groups of two (2) or three (3) to complete the assignment.

Provide each group/student with a What Does Africa Have To Teach The World About Government? Have the group read it over together. Students will, then, work in groups to complete the Country Government Profile guide sheet, examining the structure of a government chosen by the student/group. They will use the What Does Africa Have To Teach The World About Government? in which to refer when needed during the Country Government Profile. Give the students approximately 30 minutes to complete the activity.

Following World War I, Germany was in economic, political, and physical ruins. In 1933, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor and began his quiet quest against anyone who was not Arian. In 1931, Germany was given the option of hosting the 1936 Olympics. Hilter, under his Nazi German totalitarian dictatorship government system, wasn't sure it was a good idea until he was convinced that they could build the largest stadium to be seen at the Olympics and make Germany look as if it was not in ruin. He agreed! The 1936 Olympics were different from the Olympics in the past. It incorporated theatre, high-tech equipment for the games, and wonderful production with a lot of rituals that would continue into the Olympic games after Hitler's Olympics.

Hitler kept the secret of his war against the Jews throughout the two weeks of the 1936 Olympics using propaganda to show the world how well Germany was doing; the world, however, had no idea whatwas in store for Germany and the Jews who lived within its borders.

In 1989, after the death of pro-reform Chinese Communist Party (CCP) general secretary Hu Yaobang in April 1989, a younger Chinese generation wanted changes in the government and to be heard. In response, the communist government enforced marshall law on the night of 3 June, deploying troops and military tanks to occupy the square in on the crowds of students and young adults who were peacefully protesting calling for greater accountability of the government, constitutional due process, democracy, freedom of the press, and freedom of speech. China's communist government would get control of its citizens. This event has many names and is often referred to as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, the Tiananmen uprising. the June Fourth Incident, or '89 Democracy Movement.

This informative geography and civics lesson will take students on a journey into the events surrounding the Tiananmen Square Massacre and examine what government policies led to the devastating outcomes. Students will understand the similarities and differences in the constitutional and basic rights of those under communism versus democracy. The younger generation fought for more democratic rights while the communist government fought to keep its stronghold on the Chinese citizens.

OBJECTIVE:

o The learner will examine the theories behind Karl Marx's communism.

o The learner will identify the characteristics and political philosophy of Marxism.

o The learner will examine how Marxism played a vital role in communism.

This is a quick study on Queen Elizabeth II and how she governed during her 70-year reign. Having inherited the Crown at an early age, she was not ready to be Queen, but was thrust into the position overnight. Is the United States a true democracy or a true republic or a mixture of both? This is a conceptual thinking lesson on government types and systems implemented to encourage students to develop their higher-level thinking skill sets. Students will gain an understanding of the similarities and differences between a Republic and a Democracy by working in cooperative groups to complete a comparison T-Chart. Based on their findings they will be asked to determine if the United States is a true democracy or a true republic. This can be challenging for students who have yet to develop high-level thinking strategies, but we as teachers must help them develop these skills by giving them opportunities to do so. The student will need to back up their decision with reason. It is suggested that teachers participate in students' learning process by rotating from group to group to check for understanding and provide assistance and redirection. This was used in a 7th-grade public school system but can be used at high-grade levels with success.

Conceptual teaching is based on taking a concept and going beyond the basic facts to develop a true understanding. Conceptual thinking may be challenging for some students; therefore, as the instructor you may need to provide individual guidance, whether students are working individually or in teams. Learners will strengthen their conceptual thinking skills the more they are encouraged to use these skills. With this lesson, I suggest students work in teams so they can learn from one another.

This is a fun way to have students learn the process of how a Bill becomes a Law. Students will work together with their teams to complete the group reading assignment, then students will move on to the instruction sheet that gives them the steps they need to take to complete the hexagon puzzle showing the law-making process. This lesson includes a detailed teacher guide that includes the introduction, procedure, and closure, etc.

A Lesson on the event leading up to the Ukraine Crisis 2022. In order to understand this, students need to take a deep look into the history of the struggle Ukraine has had with its more powerful neighbors in its attempts to become independent. Finally, in 1991, Ukraine was free of domination and created its own government system, and claimed independence for the first time in history. In an attempt to reach independence, there has been a great amount of bloodshed over the centuries.

Let's take a look at the rich history of Ukraine while having fun at the same time. This is an interactive lesson.
