This is a quick study on Queen Elizabeth II and how she governed during her 70-year reign. Having inherited the Crown at an early age, she was not ready to be Queen, but was thrust into the position overnight. This lesson was written the day after her passing in September 8, 2022, and is written in past-tense.
Through this study students will:
o Become familiar with the duties of Queen Elizabeth as the Monarch and head of state.
o Understand the duties of the three branches of the government.
o Understand the difference between an absolute and constitutional monarchy.
o Become familiar with Queen Elizabeth and what her life was like as Queen.
MATERIALS:
o Student Reading Activity (Included: 2 pages)
o Comparison Chart
o Would You Want to Be Queen or King in a Constitutional Monarch? (Exit Card)
o Access to the Internet for the comparison chart as they will need to research an absolute monarchy. (or) You may print off an article from the Internet to for each group to use. Here is one that compares the two.

How were they originally elected and what led to the changes in our system, leading to developing the Electoral College? It is essential that our students, as future voters, understand how our President and Vice President are elected every four years through the Electoral College. Students will explore, analyze, and summarize political parties using various avenues. In addition, they will look at the Electoral Process system and how events in history led to the ratification of the 12th Amendment. The lesson includes Road to the White House PowerPoint and Doodle Notes and a discussion.
OBJECTIVES:
(1) The learner will analyze the processes involved the reasons we use the electoral college system of presidential selection and the strategy required for a successful victory.
(2) The learner will decipher the difference between the popular vote and the Electoral College as a means of electing government officials.
(3) The learner will evaluate the importance in the ratification of Amendment 12 in establishing a process for electing the President.
(4) The learner will use the information gained through the lessons to work cooperatively and create their perfect candidate.
(5) The learner will track the election process and calculate the outcome.

What 28th Amendment Would YOU Propose?

The Constitution's 27 Amendments read like a tour through American history. This interactive, project-based lesson will provide students with an overview of the 27 Constitutional Amendments in a fun and engaging way! A deeper analysis is also promoted as this lesson is designed to give the teacher flexibility in choosing from a variety of discussion questions that will have students critically think, debate, and apply their understandings to our Constitutional rights. Transform your classroom into Congress, as the final project entails having students create and present a 28th Amendment to members of Congress (their classmates).
Time Frame: 5 to 7 class periods (55 min) contingent upon the degree of classroom discussion, and whether the teacher has by passed any of the discussion topics.
Materials:
Overview of ALL 27th Amendments with compelling discussion/debate questions;
1st Amendment: ‘Tinker V. Des Moines’: Do you think the student’s constitutional rights were violated or not?
14th Amendment: Do you agree or disagree with altering or abolishing the ‘Citizenship’ clause of this amendment?
5th Amendment: Double Jeopardy- why do you think this law exists? Do you think there are any exceptions to this law? Do you agree or disagree with this law?
8th Amendment: What defines ‘Cruel & Unusual Punishment’? Does the provided example constitute a violation of the 8th Amendment?
19th Amendment: Were the suffragists being ‘unpatriotic’ when they continued to picket the White House despite the fact the U.S. joined WWI?
12th Amendment: Do you think the ‘Electoral College’ is fair & democratic?
18th Amendment: Do you agree or disagree with those who wanted to eliminate or place restrictions on alcohol?
