1st Grade Music Centers

Students will explore the relationship between sound and vibration as they create several hand-made musical instruments.

The “Science Kids” series is intended to help teachers implement developmentally appropriate, hands-on science activities for children in Preschool, Kindergarten and the early grades. The activities in these packets are based on the scientific method and encourage inquiry-based learning. All activities can be differentiated to meet the needs of your students.

As they learn about vibrations and sound, the students will explore the following hands-on topics:

This packet includes enough lessons for 32 weeks of hands-on learning. While 32 weeks is a bit shorter than a typical school year, this curriculum is designed to be flexible in order to give children the time they need to learn, so extra days are allowed for each unit. Additional, optional activities are also included for many of the units, and these can be used to help fill your days if needed.

This curriculum supports the Next Generation Science Standards for kindergarten.

Freezing and Melting:

Investigations in this unit include:

The final investigation in this unit is a student-designed investigation that will test how certain ingredients affect the time it takes an ice cube to melt.

My Human Body

As we make the life size body model, the students will learn about:

★ The skeletal system (bones)

★ The respiratory system (lungs)

★ The muscular system (muscles)

★ The cardiovascular system (heart, veins and arteries)

★ The digestive system (stomach and intestines)

★ The nervous system (spine and brain)

This packet also includes a printable book: “My Amazing Body” (black and white)

Suggestions for additional activities are included (including printable activities)

Music and Vibration

As they learn about vibrations and sound, the students will explore the following hands-on topics:

Build a Classical Superhero! Each activity uses the students initial(s) to decode a music-inspired name, instrument, and theme song. Great for a back to school, mini class activity, or a music center.

The objective is to assemble a variety of musical qualities for the hero. Each superhero will have a different story, briefly told through their theme song and other choices. Creative writing or storytelling is encouraged.

Full-color pages for music centers/activities are included, with a variety of design and color options provided. The black & white version is also included.

What's Inside:

• Instruction Page An easy to follow guide of how to build a superhero is provided.
• Superhero Name Generator - Students use their first and last initials to generate a unique hero name. There are two choices per box to choose from - which adds variety if a student has the same first & last initials. The names are from classical composers and are not gender specific.
• Superhero Instrument Sounds - Will their superhero arrive with a loud trumpet blast or a soothing violin? The first letter of their name will lead them to the answer.
• Find Your Superhero Theme! - Every hero needs a theme, and a musical superhero is no exception. Each letter is associated with a popular classical music piece; making their themes easier to identify. A superhero theme will range from Bach'shauntingly beautiful "Toccata and Fugue" to the inspiring "Morning Mood" by Grieg.
• Meet Your Classical Superhero! - All of the activities come together here - students can choose between two characters as their heroes to name and color. The additional character can be their partner or sidekick. After their instrument and theme song have been filled in, students can use the checkbox to choose which musical era they are from.

John Williams Birthday Activities (Pre-K & Up!)

Celebrate the birthday and achievements of John Williams!

What’s Inside:

• Composer Fact Sheet: Each composer fact sheet in this series includes fun, basic information – full name, birthplace, birth date and more. One of the composer’s most popular compositions is also included. The fact sheet also lists one or more of the composer’s known associates.
• Birthplace Fact Sheet: Introduce the composer’s birthplace with a very light research paper. Use your favorite geographical resource to find the country’s capital city, size, language, and traditional foods. The historical name of some territories may have changed, but the most modern country is used for easy reference.
• Birthday Coloring Page: A fun coloring page repeats the composer’s birthday, and invites the artist to color in a special cupcake to celebrate the occasion.
• Birth Month Vocabulary This small list of six vocabulary words will contain terms related to the composer’s birthday season. Ranging from Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter – to rain, flowers, snow, and everything in between.
• Composer Vocabulary Another six-word vocabulary list that typically includes the composer’s name, birthplace, instrument, or other related terms. Space is provided to trace each term and the included handwriting paper can be used for additional practice.
• Numbers & Letter Tracing The numbers and letter tracing sheet offers additional handwriting practice.
• Handwriting & Story Pages Two types of blank paper are included, either for continued practice of vocabulary words or for story writing.

Use these chants to introduce more literature into the classroom and make the books you are using relevant to music! Use the chant to "Freeda the Cheetah" to explore movement and play along with rhythm sticks. Follow up with a lesson on rhyming words. The chant for "One Lonely Fish" is perfect for keeping a steady beat and making this book more engaging for your little ones. ❤️HOW IT WORKS:

1. Decide whether to use cards with item names or without, depending on your students' proficiency levels.
2. Distribute the animal cards around the classroom, ensuring they are easily visible and accessible to students.
3. Provide each student with a recording sheet of your choice, based on their needs. Options include sheets with card numbers, color images, and primary dotted lines or standard lines.
4. Encourage students to explore the classroom, identify the animal-themed items, and record their findings on the chosen sheet.
5. Use the answer key to review students' work and discuss their answers to the starter sentence.
