A few words about Speaking

Out of the four skills (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing), speaking is the one skill learners need more when it comes to proving they have learnt a new language. This is because speaking is a productive skill. Learners do not simply receive information and try to process it; they are required to process information and knowledge they already possess in order to produce new language and communicate.

So, how do you get your students speaking?

Most textbooks contain structured activities that practice speaking based on the topics and content of each unit. However, it is good to deviate from the book into freer conversation. These conversation questions with visual guide are generally for getting to know someone, specifically someone who might have a hard time responding to questions or who isn't very verbal.

The 4 options for each question are more general on purpose. My hope is it will make conversations easier to participate in and that it will at least get the ball rolling. It's a supplement, not a complete solution.

Whoever is using this guide may need minimal assistance learning to use it. They should be encouraged to say the words, but pointing only is okay too, at least to start.

Inside is a conversation practice activity. It's meant to be done on paper or digitally, but can be done verbally too - whether in a group or one-on-one. I had in mind both children and adults who have either language delays or a special need that makes social nuance difficult to read or pick up on. This could help with social awkwardness too.

I've marked younger scenarios with a yellow star and adult scenarios with a red star. If no star appears, it could work for any age. Check each one for which applies to you. You should be able to edit the Easel digital version to apply to you also.

It's important that whoever is using this activity knows these things:

• they can be upset or sad or unhappy in some way, but still aim for kindness and clarity (even if it's still hard to say)

• their response may be right, but they cannot control how the other person responds

• there might be other ways to respond that aren't listed, but just to pick the best one

I recommend having someone walk through at least one of the provided scenarios/questions as practice with the student(s).

Anything "Easel" or digital use might operate or format differently from TeachShare, with their "Remix" feature.

Speech Therapy Made Easy!

This set includes over 102 Articulation and Sight Word Cards to support language facilitation for basic household items. A sorting and categorisation activity is included encouraging students to explore which household items belongs into which area and room of the house.

Household items which are found in various areas of the house such as the Bathroom, Bedroom, Dining Room, Garage, Kitchen, Laundry, Living Room, Nursery, Office and Yard.

Who would benefit from using these cards?

Children who have difficulty with speech and articulation would benefit from this set. These may include children with apraxia of speech, autism, Down Syndrome and severe phonological processes would benefit from these cards. These cards would even help in building up the students vocabulary.

There are two buckets included at the end of the set. The first bucket can include the articulation cards which have been able to be successfully completed and the second bucket is for the articulation cards that might need a little bit more practice. When the students see that eventually their ”successful” buckets get full, this will help build upon their sense of achievement.

There are additional buckets included at the end of the resource which are titled with the various rooms of the house. This has been included to support the students to sort and categorise the various household items and sort them into which room/area of the house they would be found.
