By Kirsten's Kaboodle

Daily Journal Prompts Morning Work Journal Writing Mindful Coloring BUNDLE:

This journal prompts BUNDLE for 4th grade and up include a coloring doodle border that adds mindfulness to each quick write prompt.

These files include 200 journal prompts.

These files include links for Google Slides where students can use the text boxes to answer each of the writing prompts. Please refer to the final 7 pages of the product files for the digital option!

NOTE: THESE FILES INCLUDE A DIGITAL DISTANCE LEARNING OPTION!

These products include a digital option (as well as the no prep printable option). The instructions for utilizing the digital portion appear at the end of the packet.

These journal prompts for 4th grade and up include a coloring doodle border which adds a mindfulness component to each quick write prompt.

Each creative writing prompt appears on a half sheet of paper as well as on full color and black and white cards.

You will also find a quick lesson on mindful coloring.

THIS FILE CONTAINS THE BUNDLE THAT INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS:

  • Quick Writes Journal Prompts for Upper Elem. and Middle School VOLUME ONE
  • Quick Writes Journal Prompts for Upper Elem. and Middle School VOLUME TWO

Please make note of the following:

  • Each prompt allows you to include a mindful coloring component. The border included with these daily quick write journal prompts can be colored before the student answers the prompt (sometimes this gives students time to reflect on what they’d like to write) or after they’ve finished writing.
  • This activity can be used for students as an early finisher activity, a daily journal, for morning meetings, lessons on building community (and empathy), or for mindfulness practice. Please see the instructions for teaching students about mindfulness that are included in this file. If you are interested in additional mindfulness and meditation exercises, click HERE.
  • In addition to the written response pages, I’ve included prompt cards in full color and in black-and-white. These are useful if you choose to discuss the prompts as a class or in small groups. You can also place the cards in a special location and allow students to choose one they’d like to write about on a separate piece of paper.
  • Please remember that some students may not feel comfortable answering or sharing responses. It is important to respect their privacy without pressuring them to share. Either allow them to keep their response(s) private or to choose a different prompt. Forcing the issue will erode their trust in you. Let them know that they are free to share in the future, if they choose.
  • It’s okay to take these cards home to share with your family, your own children, your spouse or significant other, or your friends. In addition to providing individual reflection, they are designed to help people get to know each other beyond the surface, develop empathy, and dive deeper in their relationships. I truly believe that when you REALLY get to know your students, they achieve great things!

Please let me know if you have any questions prior to purchasing this bundle!

Character Education Bulletin Boards Activities: Kindness, Gratitude, Friendship

By Kirsten's Kaboodle

Back-to-School Character-Building Bulletin Board BUNDLE: Friendship, Kindness, & Gratitude Character Education Posters and Activities for 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade

This bundle includes THREE bulletin board poster sets.

FRIENDSHIP BULLETIN BOARD:

This FRIENDSHIP bulletin board and activities product is perfect for any time of year! It was created for 3rd grade and above (NOTE: the bulletin board can be used in lower grades, but verbiage and vocabulary on the printables are more appropriate for students in 3rd grade and above).

  • Use this friendship display on a bulletin board, classroom display, counseling office, or common area in your school.
  • There are two choices for each letter in FRIENDSHIP. Review the choices and print the words that will work the best with your class. You can also choose to use the word FRIEND or FRIENDS in lieu of using FRIENDSHIP (perhaps your bulletin board space is limited, for example).
  • The size of the letters for the bulletin board (GOOD FRIENDS ARE…) might be too large. You can adjust the size of them when you print. The letters on the image of this product (found on the cover) are printed at 65%.
  • You will find a printable for each word choice (20 pages). You will likely only use the worksheets that correspond to the words you chose for your bulletin board or display.
  • PLEASE BE AWARE that you may have students who don’t feel like they have friends. Always give your class the option to write about a family member, community member, pet, or other public figure (or someone they’d like to be their friend). If you are able to observe students while they complete the activities, it’s important to keep an eye out for students who appear uncomfortable or upset. Supporting these students might involve talking with them privately or deliberately planning subsequent activities where they can connect and interact with students.

12 DAYS OF KINDNESS BULLETIN BOARD:

This 12 Days of Kindness activity is perfect for any time of year but is particularly timely for Thanksgiving in November, any December holiday, or in February for Valentine's Day. It can be used for any grade level.

  • Use these posters on a bulletin board, classroom display, counseling office, or common area in your school.
  • Each student should complete four acts of kindness in each of the three categories during the course of 12 days OR you can simply use the letters that say “KINDNESS CHALLENGE” and ask students to complete as many acts of kindness as they possibly can.
  • There is a page that students can use to track their progress towards 12 acts of kindness. Each column should have four ripped off papers from the kindness posters when the student has completed their 12 acts of kindness challenge. You may choose NOT to use this tracker if you want students to complete more than 12 acts of kindness.
  • Many of these activities will need to be completed outside of school. This is PERFECT for homework in the month of December for the holidays or in February around Valentine’s Day. Class time can be used for discussing the acts of kindness and processing their feelings and experiences as they face and complete each act of kindness.
  • Offer additional copies of the 12 Days of Kindness if students choose to go above and beyond the 12 days.
  • It is best for students to rip ONE ACT OF KINDNESS AT A TIME (one for each of the 12 days). There are TEN acts of kindness per category (kindness to self, kindness to others, and kindness to earth) for a total of 30 acts of kindness.
  • If students ALREADY engage in an activity or suggestion, encourage them to find something different. For example, you may have students who already use reusable water bottles every single day. They would naturally need to choose a different act of kindness in that category. The idea is to challenge themselves to do something new.
  • Please note that you can CHOOSE THE TITLE for your bulletin board! Here are the choices included:
    • 12 DAYS OF KINDNESS
    • KINDNESS CHALLENGE
    • 12 DAYS OF KINDNESS CHALLENGE

GRATITUDE CHALLENGE BULLETIN BOARD:

This gratitude challenge activity is perfect for any time of year, but is particularly timely for Thanksgiving in November and/or any December holiday. It can be used for any grade level.

Research shows that expressing gratitude has a positive effect on mood, peer relationships, and an overall higher quality of life. Gratitude ignites the parasympathetic nervous system, which leads to feelings of calmness. Expressing gratitude releases dopamine and serotonin, which also results in a more pleasurable state of mind.

This file contains bulletin board letters that spell "GRATITUDE CHALLENGE" as well as letter to spell "RIP-N-RECOGNIZE" (these are optional for the bulletin board), 20 RIP-N-RECOGNIZE Gratitude Challenge posters in full color and black and white, teacher tips, a gratitude challenge points page, and letter writing templates.

  • Use these posters on a bulletin board, classroom display, counseling office, or common area in your school.
  • Set a goal for students to reach, but issue a “challenge” for students to go above and beyond the recommended goal. Each challenge (poster) is worth TWO points. Students get one point for writing the letter and an additional point for sending or delivering the letter/note. Some posters DO REQUIRE students to research an address. NOTE: The second point on any given challenge CANNOT be earned until the letter is dropped off at the post office or delivered in person.
  • You will find a challenge sheet for students to keep track of their points. You can structure the challenge in whatever way works best for your class. You can ask students to RIP-N-RECOGNIZE as an early finisher activity, a bell ringer activity, for a gratitude exercise in Social Studies, or as a writing activity during your ELA block.
  • You may choose NOT to use the points as an incentive and instead teach students that expressing gratitude is an inherently rewarding experience all by itself.
  • Each challenge sheet has enough space for 5 challenges. Simply offer copies of the same sheet for students who complete more than 5 letters/notes.
  • It is best for students to rip ONE CHALLENGE AT A TIME. Their next challenge can’t be “ripped” until they finish the first challenge they chose. This will eliminate issues with students ripping too many challenges at a time, losing the little ripped notes, and “biting off more than they can chew”.
  • There are 20 challenge options for students. Some challenges might not work for some students. Honor and respect a student’s choice NOT to do challenges that don’t work for their life circumstances. For example, you might have students who don’t know any other family members outside their immediate home, students who are in a foster situation, or students who are homeless. Requiring students to complete ALL the challenges will surely put some students in a vulnerable position and that is not the goal of this activity.

NOTE: THESE FILES INCLUDE A DIGITAL DISTANCE LEARNING OPTION!

These products include a digital option (as well as the no prep printable option). The instructions for utilizing the digital portion appear at the end of the packet.

  • Role-Playing: Students can collaborate in pairs or groups to act out a variety of scenarios and demonstrate the differences between a fixed mindset and growth mindset. Role-playing activities can be used to expose students to the variety of ways they can approach situations with a growth mindset. This activity can ultimately improve confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills.

Many of our students with learning and attention issues have difficulty reading body language. Failure to pick up on non-verbal signals, including body language and gestures, can make it hard for students or children to navigate all sorts of social situations. Body language and gestures convey messages, meaning, and important information beyond what is said. This resource is intended to help students "read" body language and navigate social situations successfully. It is also intended to provide students with opportunities to practice social skills by reading and responding to people’s body languages and gestures in an appropriate, positive manner.

▶️ 12 Scenario Task Cards

The Scenario Task Cards contain highly relevant scenarios related to body language. Students are asked what the person's body language is communicating and what it indicates the person might be feeling.

There are 12 Scenario Task Cards that come in FOUR different variations:

Set #2: Brown Task Cards without Questions

Set #3: B&W Task Cards with Questions

Students are asked what the person's body language is communicating, and what it indicates the person might be feeling.

Worksheet Variation #1: Contains three questions about what a person's body language is communicating, what it indicates he or she might be feeling, and how you can best respond to the person in that situation. (This is a perfect opportunity for your students to practice social skills and empathy!)

Worksheet Variation #2: Contains two questions about what would be an appropriate response in the situation presented, and what would be an inappropriate response in the situation presented. (Another great opportunity for your students to practice social skills and empathy!)

Worksheet Variation #3: Contains the same scenarios with a blank space for you to generate your own question and students write it on the line and answer it.

▶️ PICTURE WORKSHEETS (Print and Digital)

20 Picture Worksheets that come in 2 variations (totaling 40 worksheets). There are 20 worksheets that contain the same pictures in the Picture Task Cards.

Picture Worksheet Variation #1: Contains two questions about the message the person’s body language is sending, and how the person is feeling. In this worksheet, students have to provide evidence to support their answer about how the person in the picture might be feeling.

Picture Worksheet Variation #2: A blank space is provided for you to generate your own question and students write it on the line and answer it.

This resource provides a perfect opportunity for your students to understand social cues, interpret body language, practice social skills, and make inferences. This resource features real life scenarios and highly relevant photographs of people. Students with autism spectrum disorders often have the most difficult time with these skills and can benefit greatly from the visuals.

SUGGESTIONS FOR USE:

How/When To Use Scenario Task Cards

  • Role-Playing: Students can collaborate in pairs or groups to act out a variety of scenarios and demonstrate appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also be used to show how "response" skills are used improperly and then asking the 'audience' to help reenact properly. This activity can ultimately improve confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills and further help students understand the difference between appropriate and inappropriate responses to people's body language and gestures.
  • Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes related to body language then perform the skit for the class.
  • Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios.
  • Discussion: Students can discuss the Body Language / Non-verbal Communication Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class. They can discuss things like “What would you do?”, “Why would you do that?”, and “What are some other options you could consider?”

What Do You Do With an Idea, Problem, Chance? by Kobi Yamada Activities BUNDLE:

From the new author of Maybe, this Kobi Yamada book bundle now includes digital distance learning options in Google Slides™. Please refer to the final 7 pages of each file for the links and instructions.

These Growth Mindset Literature Units include these titles by Kobi Yamada:

  • What Do You Do With an Idea?
  • What Do You Do With a Problem?
  • What Do You Do With a Chance?

Please note that these also pair perfectly with this NEW BUNDLE of Kobi Yamada books called Trying and Maybe. Please see the following information and links to each individual product:

What Do You Do With an Idea?

What Do You Do With an Idea? by Kobi Yamada is a new, Independent Publisher's Book Award winning picture book. This literature unit is appropriate for 1st-4th grade. Note: Picture books are generally most appropriate for primary grades, but the concepts presented in 'What Do You Do With an Idea?' are appropriate for any age, so this unit is designed to reach students a bit older than the average picture book audience.

What Do You Do With an Idea focuses more on the concepts presented in the story and less on the content (although there are comprehension questions included in list form as well as task card form). In addition to the task cards and printables, you will also find a craftivity and growth mindset reflection page. Please check out the preview for What Do You Do With an Idea prior to purchasing.

My hope is that this product will help your students discover their own magnificence (with a little help from you and this amazing new picture book). Enjoy!

What Do You Do With a Problem?

What Do You Do With a Problem? by Kobi Yamada is a new picture book that works perfectly in conjunction with What Do You Do With an Idea?. This literature unit is appropriate for 1st-4th grade. Note: Picture books are generally most appropriate for primary grades, but the concepts presented in 'What Do You Do With a Problem?' are appropriate for any age, so this unit is designed to reach students a bit older than the average picture book audience.

What Do You Do With a Problem focuses more on the concepts presented in the story and less on the content (although there are comprehension questions included in list form as well as task card form). Instructions are also included on how to set up a "Problem Patrol" in your classroom to assist students in solving problems (or receiving suggestions on how to manage problems). Please check out the preview for What Do You Do With a Problem prior to purchasing.

My hope is that this product will help your students learn how to find the gems of opportunity in problems. There is also a focus on how to deal with worries that students can control and worries that students can't control (and would even be perfect for a counselor who is facilitating a group for students that focuses on anxiety, worries, or problem-solving skills). Free Yearly Updates! Social Emotional Learning is easy with these 237 daily SEL Question of the Day Google Slides. Just 5-15 minutes each morning is all you need to integrate social-emotional learning with writing while practicing speaking and listening skills every day, all year long.

Each question of the day is presented on its own slide with an image and a weekly positive affirmation. Throughout the week, students will be asked questions that relate to self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Each Monday, the affirmation statement includes a Youtube link to a related short video, song, or picture book. (Be sure to always view links to ensure they are still active and appropriate for your particular classroom.) This yearlong resource includes 240 slides (that start on July 29, 2024 and run through June 27, 2025) and can be used alone, or in conjunction with my 2024-25 Student Planner and 2024-25 Teacher Planner. From the perspective of our students, understanding and interacting with us can be quite challenging, if not downright frustrating! In candid conversations, I've heard students express sentiments like, "Teachers seem to punish the whole class for the actions of one person," "Even though I have anxiety and struggle to speak, they insist on making me present in front of everyone," "Their lessons can be dull, and then they wonder why we zone out," "Sometimes they single me out, even when I haven't volunteered," and "They expect maturity but treat us like children." These grievances are just the tip of the iceberg. Despite our best intentions, our actions and words can often lead to frustration among our students, influencing their behavior, responses, and thoughts.

This resource enables teachers to gain insight into our students' perspectives on specific situations through real-life, everyday scenarios, and vice versa! Students also have the chance to reflect on and understand teachers' viewpoints in these situations.

One buyer stated, "This is great for helping my students practice conflict resolution when an authority figure like a teacher is involved!"

This resource presents everyday, real-life scenarios that help students develop skills for effective interaction with teachers. It aims to foster positive relationships, manage conflicts, enhance social skills and behavior, and, importantly, build confidence in handling emotions when faced with situations where teachers say or do things they find challenging. Through reflections and discussions on these scenarios, students can learn the value of recognizing and understanding various perspectives, enabling them to respond thoughtfully. They will also grasp that the tone and manner of communication can either promote harmony or create tension between teachers and students.

Moreover, this resource provides opportunities for students to:

✅ Gain insight into the motives behind teachers' actions and words.

✅ Engage with teacher situations maturely and respectfully.

✅ Explore diverse problem-solving strategies.

✅ Hone their skills in respectful communication.

✅ Reflect on their own actions and behaviors, considering how they influence teacher responses.

✅ Offer constructive suggestions to teachers for alternative approaches.

✅ Learn to negotiate and find compromises with teachers.

✅ Foster stronger and more positive relationships with teachers.

*******************************

This resource focuses on 44 common, real-life scenarios and issues that students encounter daily. It comprises 176 worksheets centered on these scenarios, each designed to prompt students to consider effective navigation strategies and practice respectful and appropriate responses.

The worksheets are available in four variations, including both print and digital formats.

Worksheet Variation #1: Includes scenario with 3 questions

Worksheet Variation #2: Includes scenario with 2 questions

Worksheet Variation #3: Includes scenarios presented in graphic organizers, where students offer suggestions to teachers on how to handle specific situations and articulate the reasons behind their proposed ideas or solutions.

✅ **Worksheet Variation #4:**Includes scenarios without predefined questions. Instead, there is room for you to create your own questions, allowing students to write their responses accordingly.

EXTRA Blank Sheets are provided without any predefined scenarios or questions, allowing you the flexibility to generate your own scenarios and questions as needed.

All worksheets are available in both print and digital formats.

*******************************

Task Cards come in the following variations as well:

  • 44 COLORED with Questions
  • 44 COLORED without Questions
  • 44 B&W with Questions
  • 44 B&W without Questions

The Scenario Task Cards are versatile and can be integrated into various instructional settings. They can serve as components of a larger lesson, be utilized in guided small groups, facilitate whole-class discussions, encourage partner discussions before sharing with the larger group or class, or even be used in one-on-one sessions with a teacher, guidance counselor, or parent/guardian!

*******************************

How/When To Use the Teacher Scenario Task Cards

Role-Playing: Students can work together in pairs or groups to enact a range of scenarios and showcase appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also illustrate improper skill usage, inviting the 'audience' to assist in reenacting them properly. Ultimately, this activity can enhance confidence, communication, assertiveness, and social skills.
