One of the oldest lasting examples of graphic communication is the Bayeux Tapestry.It dates back to 1083. The short reading comes with comprehension questions, too.

In fact, the earliest drawing of a snowman was found in a book dating back to 1380! The book, “Book of Hours” was found in a library in the country of the Netherlands. Read about a famous sculptor hired to make a snowman, a snowman which helps predicts the weather in Switzerland and two more stories about snowmen! 6. Why do We Have to Learn History? Students always ask me this question. My answer-much of what we have today was because of things developed by people that lived long ago.This reading activity shares many things we have today thanks to previous cultures. Firstly, there are eight reading comprehension activities, or informational texts, about:

• Charlemagne
• William the Conqueror
• King Richard I
• Robin Hood
• Genghis Khan
• Joan of Arc
• The Renaissance
• The War of the Roses

These activities require NO PREP and have a body of text that students need to read through thoroughly; then they can use the text to find the comprehension and grammar answers. All texts then have an extension activity, a crossword and a wordsearch for those fast finishers. Answers, for teacher use, are on the final page of each document.

Then, there are three biography writing units about Charlemagne, Joan of Arc and William the Conqueror. The units have been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

Also, there is an opinion writing unit about who was the most influential figure from the Middle Ages: Charlemagne, Joan of Arc or William the Conqueror. This unit has again been split into three or four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

Finally, there is a Middle Ages Timeline Activity and Display. It is perfect for introducing students to the some of the key events and people of the period. There are 36 posters or task cards that include many of the key events from the end of the Western Roman Empire until the first voyages to the Americas.

Use this informative Reader's Theater Script to learn about the Black Death, a disease that killed almost 1/2 the population of Europe in its worst outbreak(1347-1351). The fun/informative play uses the format of Simon, a victim of the Black Death, being a guest on Ms. Bie Ografee's talk show and the studio audience asks questions about his experiences during the time(the medical beliefs, the causes, the effects the Black Death had on Europe, etc.

Now, I am beginning a series, Let's Meet...people in the Middle Ages.This particular reading is on Hildegard of Bingen. Hildegard was a Prophet, abbess, composer, religious leader, writer of the Middle Ages. Her play may be the FIRST known musical! Her writings are still read today. The Renaissance was a time from the 14th century through the 16th century when historians say there was a great re-interest in learning. This 10 question webquest is packed with lots of information.
