Students recognize the difference between primary and secondary sources:

This activity will help students practice determining primary and secondary sources. This skill is important across a variety of subjects.

When given a source, students will determine if it is a primary or secondary source. Based on their determination, they will be directed to draw a detail to complete a picture. This allows students to add their own creativity to their work. It also makes it easy for the teacher to determine understanding of the concept presented.

Provided follow up questions increases rigor. These questions can be used for early finishers, as a written assignment, or to lead class discussion.

This activity can be used individually, with a partner, as part of a center, or with a group.

Aligns with 5th grade Studies Weekly Week 2.

Grab a bowl, hat, or box, and take these sentences, cut them (and laminate them if you want), toss em around, and let your students read and discuss what could be fictional and nonfictional. As this was meant to be an introductory lesson, maybe they won't know those words yet, so you can accept "realistic" and "not realistic," or whatever language works for your classroom! More details within!

Ever wonder what became of the Mayflower? The ship sailed with 102 Pilgrims over the Atlantic to North America, in 1620. If you are expecting to find it docked to some pier, or in a museum, you’d be wrong. That’s because the Mayflower most likely ended up as scrap wood and may have ended up in an old Quaker Barn in Great Britain!
