This lesson will have students explore the two systems of ‘Capitalism’ and ‘Socialism’. Students will go beyond the surface level of understanding, and will be prompted to apply their knowledge of these two economic systems to a distant, isolated culture called ‘Ladakh’, who have been dramatically transformed by “development” or capitalism. Students will analyze a documentary film and identify examples of each economic system. Two critical thinking activities are included that will serve to demonstrate their new understandings and have students delve deeper into the economic & political dynamics shown in the film. 1) 'Loop/Web Diagram'- Students will show how the road coming into Ladakh has changed their culture and environment. 2) Debate- In this extension activity students will be assigned one of five perspectives; all of which were presented in the documentary. This activity will prompt students to rethink any assumptions and understandings they may have had tied to the concepts of progress, development, wealth and poverty. In Socratic Seminar, students will read all about the pros and cons of each issue and form an opinion. They will then cite evidence from the text to discuss and debate their points of view and listen to the points of view of their classmates.

The typical format of a Socratic Seminar involves two circles. The inner circle participates in the discussion. The outer circle keeps track of the interactions between the group members. If you have a small group, everyone can participate and the teacher can keep track of participation.

This indoor spooky Halloween Scavenger Hunt for kids ages 8-12 is a winning combination of treasure hunt clues and spooky riddles! This printable kids' game includes 10 riddles and hiding spots for kids to venture around the house looking for clues and decoding the secret code words. Each riddle reveals a new hiding spot and code word.

HOW IT WORKS:

Print the clues and cut them in half

Fold the clues in half and hide them WELL in the hiding spots provided (see the list of hiding spots below_

A “secret mission” is read

Clue # 1 is handed to the “treasure seeker” which leads to clue 2 in a different location

Players can decode the code words on each clue as they go, or all at the same time once they’ve found all the clue cards, then write them on the answer sheet

Collect all the letters in the shaded areas on the answer sheet, then unscramble them to reveal the secret code word leading them to the final prize

The final prize is up to you! Maybe it’s a birthday gift, candy, party favors, or a handwritten letter about your next vacation. The possibilities are endless as to what you choose to hide in the final location.
