Computer Science & Technology Excel Spreadsheets

Learning about the Stock Market using Microsoft Excel lets middle schoolers see how an investment can grow and change, as well as the importance of thorough research. Utilizing Microsoft Excel, students “purchase” and track several stocks over a 6 week period. They have the opportunity to sell stocks or hold them, depending on the market research they do. Using a template they create in Microsoft Excel, they will track the increases and declines in their stock investments and see how much they can make their initial investment grow during the 6 weeks. This lesson is intended for beginning Excel users and was created using Microsoft Excel 2013. It is easily adaptable for different versions.

Which group can create the best possible classroom, using a given budget and the size constraints of the existing room? Redesign the Classroom Project lets middle schoolers work in a small group to be the architect and interior designer as they measure the existing classroom, determine what new items to purchase, and then arrange their resources into the best possible learning environment.

This project reinforces measurement, math and accuracy skills as students use their imagination and creativity. After taking the measurements, each group brainstorms what they will purchase with their budget and creates a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet (or Google Sheets) to show how they will spend their money. Next, they draw their floorplan to scale (on graph paper, using Web 2.0 tools (www.floorplanner.com or www.homestyler.com ) or Sketchup (a free download available at: http://www.sketchup.com/download) and then arrange the furnishings of the room to the best advantage. Next, students combine their work into a Microsoft PowerPoint (or Google Slides) presentation to explain and showcase their choices. Finally, students reflect on their learning, both about the project and about the success of their team. Note: This lesson is intended for beginning Excel users and was created using Microsoft Excel 2016. It is easily adaptable for different versions and an earlier version template is included.

This project was created for grades 7 and 8 but would be appropriate for upper elementary or high school students as well.

The “What Will My Car Cost?” project allows students to build skills in Internet research and critical thinking as they research costs for a car and then compute and compare payment options using Microsoft Excel. First, students research the cost for two car options (one used and one new) and then compare financing and payment options for these using formulas in Microsoft Excel. The step-by-step directions were created for Microsoft Excel 2016, but could easily be used with earlier versions of the software. Editable templates and samples are provided for both Microsoft Excel 2016 and earlier versions (2007-2013).

The “Excelling with Excel” Intermediate Activities let students continue their learning with Microsoft Excel to include more intermediate commands. This lesson assumes student already have beginner skills with Microsoft Excel including knowing these basic commands: entering and editing information, basic cell and text formatting, changing column width, creating a basic formula (SUM, AVERAGE, basic math), adding a row or column, changing page settings, printing, and creating a basic chart/graph. Learning Google Sheets - Beginner Lessons start students with no previous knowledge of Google Sheets on a path of learning the most important and frequently used commands to give them a quick start. Each lesson has a short, step-by-step tutorial that includes screenshots to walk students through the new tools they will use in the lesson. Then, they are given a creative task to solve, using those skills to create a spreadsheet. There are five lessons, each taking no more than two class periods.

This lesson has been revised to be compatible with the latest version of Google Sheets (2-2020) and also includes the older instructions and resources that were included with the original lesson for previous purchasers who are re-downloading the lesson. The older lessons are included in their own folder within the .zip file.

This lesson was created for middle school (grades 6-8) but could also be used with upper elementary or high school students.

Real Estate Career Simulation: Flip a House Project lets middle schoolers see how real estate investors purchase, improve, and resell homes for a profit. Utilizing Microsoft Word and Excel, students “purchase” a home of choice from a list and then determine the improvements they want to make to it, all while staying within their budget. Then, they design the home, using Web 2.0 tools (www.floorplanner.com or www.homestyler.com ) or Sketchup (a free download available at: http://www.sketchup.com/download ). Finally, students use Microsoft Word to prepare a one-page sale flyer for their renovated home. Note: This lesson is intended for beginning Excel users and was created using Microsoft Excel 2016. It is easily adaptable for different versions.
