Year Long Monthly At Home Reading Incentive Log & Heart Word Challenge 1st Grade

By Mrs Wilsons Neighbourhood

Are you ready to launch a year long At Home Nightly Reading Program to celebrate the joy of reading with your students? This send home incentive package encourages your students to read for a few minutes either on their own or with a parent. An additional Irregular Heart Word Challenge is designed to foster a love for reading and encourage daily reading habits. Grab this and prepare it so you are ready to build the home school connection when Back to School begins!

Each night your students engage in reading at home, they are to color ONE of the images on the provided sheet. Once all the images for the month are colored, they can cut along the dotted line and bring in that page to school. As a reward for their participation, each student will receive a small surprise (This might be a bookmark, a pencil and eraser from the dollar store, or a certificate). I also like to keep a chart on the wall and add a sticker for visual tracking.

You can choose the pages you need whether your school has an August or September Start, or even if it is a year long school.

Check out the PREVIEW for a more detailed idea of what is included.

An additional challenge encourages children to focus on three sight words a month. Parents are encouraged to provide an old newspaper or magazine, or some flyers from the mail for their child to search for these heart words and hightlight or circle them. Once this challenge is complete, students can cut out the paper badge and glue it to their certificate. The certificate tracks the entire year.

An instruction email to parents is included.

There are 12 months of challenges provided, and 4 different certificate options for the Irregular (Heart) Words Challenges to best suit your needs.

This is a terrific way of recognizing and celebrating your students' commitment to reading. Provide an easy way for parents to help instil a love for reading at a young age. In term, we are helping our students build essential skills for academic success.
