Students: What I Think I Do - Week 1 Internet Activity
By Mark Holmes
I envisaged this to be a September week 1 internet activity. It will give students an opportunity to think about how other people perceive them. It could also be used as a lesson in how to search Google effectively or used as a dictionary / thesaurus activity, where students have to find descriptive words in order to search for appropriate pictures on Google Images.
These have been doing the rounds on FaceBook and email recently. You may have received posters / postcards entitled "Teachers...." or "Moms..." and then under the title are a series of photos with captions like;
What my friends think I do
What my mother thinks I do
What I think I do
What I really do
Each caption is accompanied by an image of what that person thinks about the other person or group of people.
The sample here is of the "Teacher..." postcard. This is NOT what I am selling. I am selling a similar template entitled, "Students..." It is laid out the same as the teacher one with the same titles (the word teacher has been replaced with student), however, the pictures are missing. Students must search Google Images for appropriate pictures that characterize themselves. The photo titles are as follows;
Students...
What my friends think I do
What my mother thinks I do
What society thinks I do
What my teachers think I do
What I think I do
What I really do
My students printed off the images and then cut them out and pasted them on.
Enjoy!!!!

Class/Homeschool *BEHAVIOR* Management Bundle
This is mostly goofy stuff, to get your students laughing and to break the ice, and they might get to know each other! Silly questions can help make students feel LESS silly, since there are only 2 options and everyone will pick one. They won't at least feel like the only silly one.
The idea is to display this on a big screen and have students raise their hands with each response. You might need to read it once, have them think, then say each option separately a second time. No need to keep tally, but you could make a bar chart or make tallies for fun if you want!
This could be a good chance for you to also observe your students: who is engaging? Who seems more shy? Who speaks every time they raise their hand? Who seems too cool to participate? And so on.

Identifying the Traits of Heroes- Veteran's Day or Patriot Day (9/11) Lesson
By Innovations in Technology
The “Qualities of a Hero” project focuses on recognizing important values in everyday life and individuals. It also allows students to creatively utilize technology to express their ideas. Students start the project with a whole class discussion on heroism, which can include video presentations (see the teacher resources). They work with a team to identify and classify different individuals who might be considered heroes. An additional organizer is included to extend this activity to identifying hero qualities with their group, or the organizer can be used later in the individual lesson. Finally, students research a hero of choice and create an online poster which also includes the qualities they identified incorporated into a Wordle word-web collage.
This lesson was created to use for Patriot Day 9/11 to showcase how a disaster can bring out the best in people who react as heroes, but is a great lesson on values for anytime!
Files Included with this Lesson
• Teacher Notes and Resources (includes extension activities)
• Team Brainstorming Worksheet
• Team (or individual) Hero Qualities graphic organizer
• Research and Poster Project Expectations and Rubric
I've used this lesson with 7th and 8th graders and really enjoyed hearing some of the conclusions they drew about important life values. I hope your students enjoy it!
Note: Revision uploaded on 9/11/17 to correct one broken link in resources.
