Teach your students the /y/ sound with this fun, easy, printable letter y craft pattern! Improve letter and sound recognition as students create a visual mnemonic device to connect the beginning sound /y/ with a yawn in the shape of a uppercase letter y!

This phonics activity is great for...

• interactive alphabet notebooks
• letter of the day or letter of the week
• reviewing or introducing letter sounds
• small group activities or literacy centers
• fine motor development (gluing, coloring, tracing, and cutting skills)
• and creating a sound wall bulletin board in your classroom as a visual reminder of the sound

This letter craft file includes THREE printable template options for turning the uppercase letter y into a yawn:

• Print each page onto colored paper (construction paper, cardstock, or colored printer paper) and have the students color the pajamas (striped template, or have them create their own), then cut and glue the rest of the parts
• One printable page to be printed in color then have students color the pajamas (or print the blue striped pajamas in color), then cut and glue each part (NO PREP!)
• One printable page to be printed in black and white then have students color, cut, and glue each part (striped PJ template, or have them create their own) (NO PREP!) This page could also be printed on to cardstock to cut and trace onto colored paper
