Spring is here and with it brings Cinco de Mayo! School is drawing to a close. Students are antsy. So, why not take a break from the regular curriculum and cover a little cultural enrichment?

This resource includes a Cinco de Mayo reading comprehension (English and Spanish versions), a list of Spanish vocabulary words that cover key elements of Cinco de Mayo, and 8 different fun practice sheets. These also make great bell-ringers or work for early finishers!

Includes:

  1. Reading Comprehension: Simple, short reading comprehension about Cinco de Mayo in both English and Spanish. Spanish versions using entry-level Spanish. Includes 7 reading comprehension questions.
  2. Vocabulary List: From el soldado to la herencia, continue lesson with a curated list of 25 Cinco de Mayo words in Spanish.
  3. Venn Diagram: Engage your students in critical thinking as they categorize their new vocabulary by grouping it according to the appropriate holiday.
  4. Repetition-Based Learning: Utilize the power of repetition to solidify vocabulary retention. Students will practice writing seasonal words multiple times, enhancing their memory and fluency.
  5. Word Search: This activity enhances spelling, vocabulary recognition, and problem-solving skills.
  6. Matching: Learners to make connections between words and their translations. By actively associating and pairing words together, learners establish meaningful connections that enhance their understanding and retention of vocabulary.

They must think about the meanings of the words, consider their spelling, and create clues that correspond to each word. This active involvement promotes deeper processing and understanding of the vocabulary.
  9. Word Jumble: Challenge your students' word recognition skills with an exciting word jumble activity. They'll create their own jumbles to reveal names of Spanish Cinco de Mayo vocabulary.

The constant buzz and excitement always makes late Spring one of the most challenging seasons to teach. Give yourself a break from the routine all while keeping your students quiet, busy, and happy!

This packet can also be used by a substitute with no Spanish knowledge at all - it's great for emergencies!
