My 5th graders LOVED this resource. When I first introduced the sentence building activity to the kids, each student was given a noun, verb, and adjective. They went to their seats to build a sentence, then met their peers at the center of the room to read their sentence and exchange one of their word tiles, returning to their seat to build a new sentence. The kids said they enjoyed being creative and that it felt like they were playing with trading cards.

April Fool's Day Grammar Escape Room

By Language Arts Excellence

Looking to have a little fun with your students on April Fool's Day? Pretend you're giving them a test and fool them with this fun yet rigorous grammar-based escape room!

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length April Fool's-themed Escape Room. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task, but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. All tasks are Language Arts skills-based so that with this fun lesson, learning is not sacrificed. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game!

How does it work?

Your students thought they had a grammar test today, instead, you fooled them with an escape room! They are stuck in your classroom until they solve 5 grammar-based tasks about April Fool's Day!

  • Don't Be a Crank, It's Just a Prank: In the first task, students will read 8 fun prank ideas (like the classic cream cheese on the toothbrush trick). In each passage, one word is underlined. Students must identify the part of speech of the underlined word by assembling a mat puzzle that, when assembled correctly, will reveal their first code.
  • Spaghetti Tree: In the second task, students will read about the epic "Spaghetti Tree" prank done by the British media. In each paragraph there is an incorrect homophone. Students must identify the homophones and write them correctly on their answer sheet. Shaded boxes within each answer will form their code.
  • April Foolin' Around the World: In the third task, students must match facts about April Fool's Day around the world to the type of sentence it is (declarative, interrogative, subjunctive, imperative, conditional) by drawing a line connecting the sentence with its type. Letters not intersected by these lines will form their third code.
  • Fool Me Once: In the fourth task, students will read 8 "fool" quotes. Each one is missing a comma. Students must insert the comma in the correct place, then write down the word before it. Shaded boxes within each answer reveal the fourth code.
  • Encrypted Message: In the final task, students must decode an encrypted message (a Shakespeare quote about the joy of April) from the codes they collected along the way.

Product Includes:

  • Escape Room Basics
  • Detailed Day-Of Instructions
  • Escape Room Print Checklist
  • Student Teams Chart
  • Materials for 5 Tasks: task signs, task instructions, and supplementary materials
  • Opportunities for Differentiation
  • Student Answer Sheet
