Peer pressure is real and all too common! Teens constantly experience all kinds of peer pressure (positive and negative) both in and out of school. Peer pressure can ultimately affect teens' decision-making, behaviors, emotions, and self-esteem. It's often hard to navigate difficult situations when dealing with negative peer pressure and hard to take risks when experiencing positive peer pressure.

PASSAGE TITLE: “Revenge”

This resource includes ONE full-page reading passage related to Revenge. The passage is in dialogue form to make it more interesting and relatable. To determine whether this passage is suitable for your students, this is what the passage is about:

A teenager tries to persuade her friend to get revenge on his past bully by shaming him on social media. (Negative Peer Pressure)

After students read the passage, they will complete a worksheet that consists of four open-ended questions and support their responses with evidence from the text.

The "Challenge Your Mindset" lesson plan is designed for 3rd to 6th-grade students to help them understand the difference between a fixed and growth mindset and develop a growth mindset. The lesson includes two sets of task cards that challenge the students' fixed mindset thinking and prompts them to shift to a growth mindset thinking. The activity is designed to be conducted in pairs or small groups, allowing for collaborative learning and discussion.

Peer pressure is real and all too common! Teens constantly experience all kinds of peer pressure (positive and negative) both in and out of school. Peer pressure can ultimately affect teens' decision-making, behaviors, emotions, and self-esteem. It's often hard to navigate difficult situations when dealing with negative peer pressure and hard to take risks when experiencing positive peer pressure.

PASSAGE TITLE: “Controlling Behaviors”

This resource includes ONE full-page reading passage related to Controlling Behaviors. The passage is in dialogue form to make it more interesting and relatable to students. To determine whether this passage is suitable for your students, this is what the passage is about:

A teenage girl innocently befriends a new male student at her high school. Her boyfriend/partner is jealous of her new male friend and demands that she not interact with him or other boys – even if they are “just friends.” In the end, she must decide whether she will honor her boyfriend/partner’s wishes and isolate herself from male friends or set boundaries or eave him due to his controlling behaviors. (Negative Peer Pressure)

After students read the passage, they will complete a worksheet that consists of four open-ended questions and support their responses with evidence from the text.

A detailed Answer Key is included to help you review the answers and engage your students in meaningful discussions.

The Writing/Discussion Questions can be used as a writing assignment or for discussions – your choice! You can use the Writing/Discussion Questions either before or after students read the passage.

Use Questions BEFORE Reading

  • The questions can be used before students read the passage to build background knowledge of the topic presented in the text, or students can use the questions to engage in meaningful discussions to prepare them for the reading of the text.

Use Questions AFTER Reading

  • The questions can be used after students read the passage to express their “new” understanding of the topic presented in the text. They can also be used to give students an opportunity to apply or share what they have learned from the passage.

You can use some questions before and after they read the passage – it’s totally up to you!

Please note, the Writing/Discussion Questions are the same exact questions in both the Task Cards and Worksheets. (Answer Keys are NOT included for these questions. There are no concrete right or wrong answers. Students use the questions to express their thinking and ideas about the topic under discussion.)

HOW TO PLAY

1.Simply pass out the cards to all the players individually.

2.Encourage everyone to sit in a circle.

3.Pick one player to go first.

4.They are to read one of their cards. For example, “I have Breathing. Who has Exercise?”

5.The next person who has the Exercise card reads their card and so forth.

6.Play continues until all of the cards are read.

7.If you want to make this more challenging, you can time the game and see if you can break your own record!

Simply cut, laminate and keep these cards for a long time! There are a total of 20 cards.
