Short Vowel Word Sorts are a no-prep phonics activity that can be used to introduce a new phonics pattern or review. Sorts have multiple options to meet the needs of your students. Use for whole group, small group instruction, or center work.

• Students interact with the anchor charts to solidify WHEN g says /g/ and WHEN g says /j/
• Students create their own anchor chart to further stick the learning
• The lesson wraps up with an anchor chart for the room for reference to the Hard G and Soft G rule with the characters of Cat and Mice that students won't forget.
• Follow up with a Bump it Game in Center rotations for a few days and finally, an assessment of the skill with a Word Sort with variations for different learning levels.
